A little background here, a person using Access 97 is not able to enter numbers with decimal points into a field that has a data type for numbers. Whenever he enters the data it changes to a date when the number will appropriately convert, or the number would contain a hyphen where the decimal point should be.

He has tried all the formatting options. The last test was he created a database on his machine, sent the database to me and on my machine (running Access XP) it works fine. So, I sent him a database that I converted back to Access 97 and he tried it on his machine. He still was unable to enter decimal points and have them appear as decimal points. Whole number seem to work fine.

Now he has also told me that when he first opened the database I created he was given a message about VB. It stated that my dbase had been converted to his version of VB. Is this normal?

He now also tells me that he has the same difficulty with Excel spreadsheets and decimal points. Is there a connection between Access and Excel that is missing a critical file? He has tried all the SR patches and reinstalling the programs but without success.

If the problem occurs in Access and Excel, perhaps his Regional Settings are not as he expects them to be. Have him open the Regional Settings control panel on his PC and have him check the number, currency, date and time settings very carefully.

The message about VB normal if you open a database that has been converted from another version of Access.

Just had an odd thought on this issue. I saw it before. Ask the fellow having a problem to use a comma, instead of a period, when putting in a decimal point. See if that works. If it does, that means he has his regional settings setup to use the comma as the decimal place holder, and the period for the date separator, so when he uses the decimal place, his system is thinking it’s a date.

Regional settings can be very confusing, especially if the user has selected one of the European settings that use commas for decimal points, periods for digit grouping and periods, hyphens or spaces for delimiting parts of dates. I would be very surprised if this turned out to be something other than regional settings, so keep us posted on the outcome.

Thanks to every one the help you gave on this issue has solved the problem. As was suggested, the Regional settings were wrong. As of Saturday he was getting things straightened out.
