A user asked me if an Excel Workbook that uses VBA macros can be put on our Intranet and still expect the macros to work (when accessed thru the Intranet).
I tried searching here but did not find anything.
If VBA macros do work when accessed this way, are there any special commands needed?

    Thanks,
    Chuck

If you mean by “put on out intranet”, having the XL workbooks available on a network drive accessible to all, there should be no real problems. We do this with many files in our network.

It is important to keep the macros in the workbook so that the users all have access to them (as opposed to in an addin or someones personal.xls).

        Steve,

I sent your response to the user and have not heard back yet.
If they are talking about having a link on an internal website that opens a workbook that is stored on the network, I assume that as long as all the macros needed are in the workbook, it would work.
I will let you know what the user response is.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

        Steve,

The user is asking if we post the link on the internal web page, when the the user using IE 6.0, clicks on the link to the workbook and it opens the workbook, will the macros work?

The answer I would say is yes. When you download from a link the brwser will ask if you want to “save to disc” or open. If the excelw/b is stored on a file server somewhere there is no reason why the macros would come with it. Obviously if the end PC has high macro security levels it may halt the macros working….hope this helps?

How is it linked? Is it opening XL and the file (it should) or is it opening as a some kind of web page (I don’t know)?

[You could create a sample file and test it…]

            Steve/Jerry,
Thanks. I think we will just have to try it. He was asking up front to see if there were any “Gotchas” before he finished the work. I will suggest he test with a small sample. Thanks for the input.

In my experience, the best answer is “it depends” on what your VBA does. None of my Excel applications work when run in a web browser because I have a lot of code that shows/hides columns/rows and sometimes entires sheets. There are many other things you can do in VBA that will fail miserably when run in a browser. If the VBA is simple stuff, and no pop-up forms then it should be ok.
