VBE Help Script Error (Word 2002)

Whenever I access a new Help topic in the VBA Editor, an error message displays saying “An error has occrrued in the script on this page.” The caption of the message is “Internet Explorer Script Error.”

I have applied Office XP SP3, WinXP SP2, and Office 2003 is also installed on this PC. Any idea where to start?

Does the correct help item get displayed despite the error message? If so, I would just tell Internet Explorer not to display script error messages:
– In Internet Explorer, select Tools | Internet Options…
– Activate the Advanced tab.
– Make sure that the “Display notification a notification about every script error” check box is CLEAR (not ticked.)
– Make sure that the “Disable Script Debugging” check box is SET (ticked.)
– Click OK.
If you can’t view the help item, did you install the Office versions in the correct order? (Office 2003 after Office XP)

Yes, the correct Help item is displayed. The check boxes are cleared (Display notification) and ticked (Dsiable Script Debuggin) as you suggest.

One other problem I’ve experienced on this PC (for another user, but not this one) is upon pressing Alt-F11 to get to the VBE, the Project Viewer is always maximized, regardless of what template I open (or if none is opened), and regardless of how I last left it. (I would never maximize the Project Viewer.) After restoring to normal size, I have no more problems within the Word session.

Could these problems be related? How should I repair? Complete re-install of Office XP, then Office 2003? At what point apply XP SP3?

Take a look at Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 816948 & see if any of the other suggestions regarding your web browser apply. A reinstall of Office XP should not help 2003. In fact, you would then have to reinstall Office 2003 afterward (you must always install from oldest to newest). I wouldn’t think that applying patches to Office XP would help Office 2003, but if you’ve applied patches or updates to XP after installing 2003, I’d reinstall Office 2003.

Word 2003 is not causing any problems. It’s the Help system in Word XP only where where the difficulty occurs.

OK, I didn’t look at the version in the subject carefully enough. I can’t find anything on the KB that would give any other suggestions. Does Office XP have a repair function under the Help menu? If so, I’d try that before a complete reinstall.

No Repair function under Help, but it’s available from the installaiton CD. If I run Repair from the installation CD, would I need to reapply SP3 after?

Can you post the precise wording of the script error? This or a similar problem has come up on a couple different boards, and usually relates to a specific feature of the HTML help system. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the keywords to find the posts, so that’s why I need the specific error text. I trust you can make the error recur at will.

Oh, yes… I have no problem reproducing the error. Here’s a screen shot of the error message. Worth noting is the fact that the path references Office 2003. On this PC, Office XP is in Program FilesMicrosoft Office and Office 2003 is in Program Files/Microsoft Office 2003.

That is a different error than the one I remember, and I think you’re onto something with the mixed up paths. Unfortunately, other than an arduous uninstall of 2003, fixing up XP, then resintalling 2003, I’m not sure how you’d straighten it out.
