Absolutely driving me nuts already.

1. I have (3) computers on network.
a. laptop with Windows 7 home premium- no problem with
connection to internet.

b. Desktop with Windows XP 3 – no problem with connection
to internet.

c. Desktop with Windows 7 home premium – intermittent
internet connection.

I checked all cables, disconnected router and re-connected, ran
diagnostic internet connection in the problematic desktop, etc. etc.
Further, I ran antivirus program, and Malwarebytes anti-Malware,
IoBit Anti-malware fighter, and Super Antispyware and everything
was clear.
I visited many forums and tried many suggestions but nothing worked.
I suspect there are individuals that have faced this problem and arrived
at a solution. Perhaps there are individuals here that have considerable
networking background that can pin point just where the issue might be?
I am at wits end and need some help with this challenging problem.
Please help if you can and I appreciate your time and effort.
Thanks

rpiz,

Welcome to the Lounge as a new poster!

If your NIC (Network Interface Card) is not built into your motherboard I’d open your case, remove the card and then reseat it. If this doesn’t fix the problem, or your NIC is builtin to the MB, the next thing I’d do is borrow a NIC from another machine or a friend, disable the builtin NIC in BIOS if there is one and try the new card. If this doesn’t work I’m out of optioins. HTH

Is ‘a’ used wirelessly.
Is ‘b’ & ‘c’ wired.

Do you use ‘b’ & ‘c’ at the same time.

This will show you how to change the order your devices connect. 36155-Wireless-Setting

• #1436826

Does this occur on the problematic pc when either wired or wireless or both ?

Usually the first thing to do is to update/reinstall the Network drivers.

• #1436887

OK!
Super Moderator: NIC is built into the Motherboard.

Roderunner: (a) the laptop is wired. (b) & (C) are also wired.
All worked fine in regard to the Internet connection until
a few days ago.

Sudo 15: All three computers are wired. The problematic computer (c)
did in fact work fine for many weeks after the new build without
a hitch. And (c) worked at the same time as the laptop or the other
desktop(a) in regard to the internet connection.

One interesting note that has occurred a couple times, again with the
problem desktop, during this mess is that Firefox upon opening would
arrive at the page set; but when I attempt to go to another site it
blows out Firefox. When I restart Firefox I’ll either get no connection
or it will blow out again when I attempt another site. Also, at times
Firefox will remain open, but each and every site I get the message that
it cannot connect to the server??????? I even downloaded Firefox again
on the other computer and then reinstalled it on the problematic computer
to no avail. Then again, at times, Firefox would remain open and function
properly while visiting a number of sites. Subsequently, the connection
would be lost and I am back to the same problem. When I checked the
NIC adapter via the control panel, it indicates that it is functioning properly?
Like I stated in my initial post, this is definitely a vexing issue?
Again, I appreciate all the help that can be mustered at Windows Secrets Lounge.

Hi rpiz, are you using the same Firewall & Antivirus etc on all your pc’s. ?

• #1436904

Work your way through these to see if they help http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/server-not-found-connection-problem

• #1436959

Roderunner: Yes I am using Avira Antivirus and Comodo firewall on each computer.

Sudo15: Yes, I worked through the items listed in that web site: but no joy. I even reset
Firefox to see if that would provide a solution, but that didn’t happen. Perhaps
there is yet other options that can be tried????

• #1436962

It would seem that FF isn’t the problem then.

Did this problem come out of the blue or had you downloaded anything recently ?

It’s the intermittent nature that makes this difficult to nail down and I’ve known Comodo Firewall to cause connectivity problems.

To isolate both Avira and Comodo, boot up into Safe Mode with Networking to see if you get the same problem.

If you don’t then uninstall Comodo for the time being and recheck.

You could also try the following commands as an administrator from the Command Prompt pressing Enter after each, if you still get the same problem in Safe Mode with Networking.

netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
exit

Now reboot.

• #1437012

Sudo15 I entered ‘Safe mode’ and followed your suggestions and entered each of the items in
the order listed. After reboot nothing changed, and still no internet connection.

Prior to the above, I booted and Firefox opened and the start page appeared for
approximately 20 seconds, then Firefox blew out and disappeared.

I then uninstalled Comodo firewall followed by a reboot. That didn’t help because
still no internet connection.

I did have an ICON appear at one point with the following: ‘Revocation information
for the security certificate for this site is not available. Do you want to proceed?’
Issued TO: Javadl-esd-secure.oracle.com
Issued by: Geo Trust SSL CA
Valid from: 5/28/2013 tp 6/1/2014

A separate ICON appeared a number of times: ‘Phone Control API’

Another observation: An exclamation mark appeared on Device Icon
‘driver for SM Bus Controller is not installed’

Lastly: Question would Windows firewall conflict with Comodo firewall??

Perhaps the above will lead down the path to a solution????? Help!!!!

• #1436961

Hi rpiz, I used to use Avira Antivirus and Comodo firewall, both are excellent but can be rather difficult to set-up properly especially Comodo. Click my PC Specs to see what I use.

What make of router do you have ?

• #1437013

Check
Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections tab > Lan Settings button

Make sure “Use a proxy server….” is not checked.

Jerry

• #1437014

To get the driver for the SM Bus Controller you will need to go to the computer’s support site or motherboard if not an OEM machine and download the Chipset drivers, but clicking on Action/Scan for hardware changes may reinstate it.

After you have looked at the Proxy Server box, under the Content tab click on Clear SSL state but not sure if this will resolve the certificate error.

Comodo would probably have disabled Windows Firewall, but as you have uninstalled Comodo then there wouldn’t be any conflict.

As for the Phone Control API have you installed that app http://www.windowsphone.com/en-gb/how-to/wp8/windows-phone-app-for-desktop

• #1437015

Jwitalka: ‘Use a proxy server….’ is not checked.

Sudo15: SM Bus Controller -driver update icon is grayed out?

Given that Comodo had no affect on my internet connection I assume it would allow for
its reinstall???

I have not installed the so called ‘Phone Control app’ ??

regarding the intermittent loss of internet connection, are there other options that I can
explore?

• #1437016

You say you have checked the cables. How?

Have you tried using a known working cable from a working PC to the PC which has the problem?

• #1437027

If there’s no change after trying a different cable or proving the one you are using, download AdwCleaner onto a working computer and copy across to see if it finds any PuPs.

While trying another browser is part of the FF troubleshooter, did you get the same problem with IE ?

Leave Comodo off for the time being and check that Windows Firewall is running http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/turn-windows-firewall-on-off#turn-windows-firewall-on-off=windows-7

I wasn’t aware that Avira was like Avast and didn’t have its own firewall.

I think that you will need to download the Chipset drivers rather than relying on Windows for the SM Bus Controller driver.

Did you try Action/Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager ?

Can you also open a command prompt as an administrator then type and enter sfc /scannow and let us know what it reports.

Go Start, type msconfig then press Enter and check under the Startup tab and check Services to see if the Phone app is listed as a Start up item.

Can you also check Programs & Features to see if it’s listed and uninstall if there.

• #1437050

Browni: I tried (3) three known good cables- no change.

Sudo15: I downloaded and installed ‘AdwCleaner’ program on the problematic computer, and after running the
program, no unwanted programs appeared.

I in fact tried IE and Dragon browsers beyond Firefox and neither would connect to the internet.

I did verify that Windows Firewall was on and working.

I ran ‘Action/scan’ in Device Manager but it yielded nothing.

Need help with ‘sfc /scannow’ running as administrator. I am in administrator now and typed
‘sfc /scannow’ but received a message that I have to run as administrator???

I ran ‘msconfig’ and under ‘startup ‘ and ‘services’ tabs and no Phone app was listed there?

Need help with this one! When I have opened ‘Programs & Features’ what am I targeting for uninstall?

• #1437058

Pre-amble: I am a relative novice compared to most people on this site, so my comments may not have any bearing on your problem… With that said:

I had intermittent Internet Connections on my Windows 7 desktop, much like you are describing. After much googling, I think my problem lies with the Bonjour Service for Windows (Apple service), that was installed via Photoshop CS3 and I-tunes. I’m old but seem to remember a similar problem in XP… So I went into my old XP machine and discovered that I had changed the Bonjour Service from automatic (default) to Manual.

So I went into my Windows 7 > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tasks > Services and changed the Bonjour Service from automatic (default) to Manual. So far on restarts I have not lost my internet connection, so I think this is the solution (for me at least).

Sounds simple? Well there is one caveat: The Bonjour Service (at least in my Windows 7 with Photoshop CS3) is not called Bonjour Service like it was in Windows XP. Believe it or not, it goes by the following name: ##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##
It was at the top of the listings of services, and when you click on it the tabs that open identify it as the Bonjour Service … totally beyond me…
Note: changing the Bonjour service from automatic to manual still allows programs (Photoshop and I Tunes in my case) to run. It just does not load automatically which in my case, destroys the Internet connection. (It appears to create a Public Network, allowing the sharing of I Tunes / Photoshop modules, which my Windows 7 can’t handle…)

So that has solved my problem. It may not be related to your problem, especially if you don’t have the Bonjour Service installed. But you might want to look under Services to see, and if it is there you might want to give it a try, until some of the people here who really know, give you some advise.

Jim

• #1437086

The file that would be downloaded for Windows Phone shows it as WindowsPhone.exe so I assume it would be listed in Programs and Features as Windows Phone.

To run the Command Prompt as an administrator go Start and type cmd.exe then right click on cmd and select Run as administrator.

As it could be worth checking to see if you have Bonjour and its status, check that all your Network Services are Started as well.

Go Start, type services.msc then press Enter.

Their start up type should be Automatic or Manual

COM+ Event System
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wired Autoconfig is set to manual.
Workstation

If a service is not running, click on it to highlight then click on Start.

If it fails to start then right click on it and select Properties to check the Dependencies and that each of them are running.

Any Dependencies that aren’t listed in Services can be found in Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices/Non-Plug and Play Drivers and if they are buggy, they could have a yellow alert against them.

Their status can be found by right clicking on them and selecting Properties.

Under the General tab will show if they are working properly and clicking on the Driver tab will show its start up type and depending which of the Start and Stop buttons are active, whether it is started or not.

• #1437107

Akjudge: Checked services and there is no ‘Bonjour’ listed nor a similar string as you have listed in
your post.

Sudo15: I ran ‘sfc /scannow’ and a message appeared stating, ‘Windows Resource Protection did not
find any integrity violations’.

I again revisited services, and each of the items that you provided were in fact listed as either
‘automatic or manual’.

I again checked the NIC adapter and it indicates that it is working.

Further, I clicked on ‘Local area Connection status’ and it is registering Bytes sent and
received as I studied the icon. Also, ‘IPv6 Connectivity’ indicates ‘no network access’ ????
Why would ‘Local area Connection status’ show Bytes sent and received if I cannot connect
to the internet??

• #1437110

I note in post #5 that this problem only appeared a few days ago.

Have you tried restoring the problematic system to before then?

Also, if you type

ipconfig

from a command prompt, which IPv4 address does it show?

ETA One final question, you state that it blows out Firefox, what do you mean by that? Does Firefox crash, close down or is just unable to access the internet?

• #1437111

When you checked the Services were they showing as Started in the Status column ?

• #1437114

Browni: If I stated ‘few days ago’ that is just an approximation because I have been
struggling with this thing for a week or so??

ipconfig yielded 10.0.0.2 is that helpful?

Regarding Firefox, at times I would attempt one site after another and it would just give
me a message indicating cannot connect. And other times Firefox would open at my
start web site and then I would try to visit another site at which time it would totally
shut down and disappear from the screen.

Sudo15: At the ‘Services’ screen all of the items except ‘Wired Autoconfig’ show as Started.

• #1437117

Browni: If I stated ‘few days ago’ that is just an approximation because I have been struggling with this thing for a week or so??
But have you tried restoring the system to a point previous to the problems you are having?

ipconfig yielded 10.0.0.2 is that helpful?
It’s interesting, what IP addresses do the other PC’s on your network show?

Regarding Firefox, at times I would attempt one site after another and it would just give me a message indicating cannot connect. And other times Firefox would open at my start web site and then I would try to visit another site at which time it would totally shut down and disappear from the screen.

I’m flumoxed by that at present.

• #1437135

You need the Wired Autoconfig service to be started to get a wired connection.

As per the instructions in Post #19 click on the service and a blue Start link and the service description will appear at the top left.

Click on Start to see if Started then appears in the Status column.

If it fails to start, right clicking on it and opening its Properties/Dependences lists – Extensible Authentication Protocol, NDIS Usermode I/O Protocol and RPC and you have said that RPC is started.

If you scroll back up the services you will find the Extensible Auth. service.

Check to see if this is showing as started and follow the same procedure to start if not.

One of its Dependencies is the CNG Key Isolation which is listed just up from Extensible if you need to check if that is started.

The NDIS Usermode I/O Protocol can be found in Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices/Non-Plug and Play Drivers and could have a yellow alert next to it.

Right clicking on that and selecting Properties will show if it’s working properly or not and under the Driver tab will show its Start status by whichever button is active i.e. if the Start button is active then it is stopped and vice versa with the Stop button.

If under the General tab you get a driver error message and it cannot be started, close its windows then right click on its name in Non-Plug and Play Drivers and select Uninstall then reboot to effect.

Rebooting again will reinstate it then check for connectivity.

• #1437161

Sudo15: I Started ‘Wired Autocconfig’ service as per instructions.

I checked ‘Extensible Auth’ service and it shows as ‘started’.

Further, upon checking, ‘CNG Key Isolation’ service shows as ‘started’.

I checked ‘NDIS Usermode I/O Protocol’ in Device Manager and there was no yellow alert next to it.
Further, selecting Properties it shows that it is working; and in the ‘Driver tab’ the ‘Stop’ button is
active.

I rebooted and still no internet connection.

So far this has been quite a journey! I am ready for the next chapter. Thanks so much for your
perseverance and patience.

• #1437168

SUDO15: After completing the aforementioned changes, I rebooted and thereafter went back to
check the services only to find that ‘Wired Autoconfig’ service was not showing as ‘started’?
I again followed the procedure to have it show as ‘started’ and rebooted; unfortunately it doesn’t
remain as changed? Should the ‘startup type’ be changed to ‘Automatic’ as opposed to ‘Manual’??

After the above change I again started Firefox, and this time it opened to my start page web site. I then
went to another web site, and it also appeared. But when I attempted yet another web site I received the
message ‘can’t establish a connection’????

• #1437169

Hi rpiz,
Do you get the same problem when the other 2 computers are shut-down ????

• #1437187

Roderunner: When the other (2) two computers are shut down the same situation exists.

• #1437229

As you are only using a wired connection then you could change this to Auto.

Also go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices and expand Network adapters.

Because of the connectivity problems you’ll probably have a number of incremented Microsoft ISATAP Adapters (#2 etc.) which you can right click on and select Uninstall as you only need the original.

Either before of after you do that, right click on the Ethernet Adapter and select Properties.

Under the Power Management tab ensure that the box to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is unchecked.

If it’s checked then that could be why the Wired Autoconfig keeps stopping as when the adapter is not in use, it will stop as it is set to manual and will no longer be in use.

If that isn’t it then the next step would be to open Event Viewer and look for related Errors with the appropriate time stamp.

Go Start, type event viewer then press Enter.

When the logs have loaded, in top window will be listed Critical, Error, Warning, Info etc.

You shouldn’t have any Critical, but click on the box next to Error then on View All Instances of This Event which is in the right pane.

Look for any related errors with an appropriate time stamp and click on it.

Details will appear in the lower pane and giving an Event ID together with a blue Event Log Online Help.

Can you let us know what those details are and the Event ID number.

Clicking on the blue Online Help link can take you (but not always) to a MS article with possible solutions.

• #1437252

Hi rpiz,
Have a look at my file, it could be the cause of your problem BUT don’t alter your router. 36174-MTU

• #1437253

Sudo15: Let me begin by apologizing for not indicating at the outset that I also have a Belkin router in my setup.
I have it in place to accomodate my Kindle with access to Amazon products. It has worked without fail
during this issue with the Windows 7 computer. Now I will attempt to answer the questions or points in your
last post.

Regarding the Ethernet Adapter Power Management there are (3) three items listed there. 1. Energy efficient Ethernet,
2. reduce link speed during standby, and 3. Reduce link speed during system idle.

Now with the Event Viewer: There are a number of errors listed, and I looked at the period of time from Jan. 20, 2013
to the present, which will encompass the problematic period of intermittent internet connection on Windows 7 PC.

First error example: VSS EventID; 8194 Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVsswriter
Callback interface. hr=0x80070005, Access is denied. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the
writer or requestor process.

Another error example: Service Control Manager – EventID 7034 Live update service terminated. This error and the like
EventID 7001 had to do with update issues that couldn’t be performed because of the lack of internet connection.

Error example: Kernel-Event Tracing EventID: 2 Session “Homegroup Log” failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000035.

Error example: DistributedCOM EventId; 10005 DCOM got error “1084” attempting to start the service WSearch with arguments in
order to run the service:

Error example: WMI EventID: 10 Event filter with query “SELECT” from_InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA
32_Processor” AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage >9″ could not be reactivated in namespace “//,/root/CIMV2” because of error
0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Error example: kernel-EventTracing EventID 2 Session “SKyDriveSessionname” failed to start with the following error:0xC0000022.

The above error examples are repeated a number of times during this focus period and a number of them are related to the
inability to connect to the internet.

With this effort to answer these questions I have at least improved on my typing skills and hopefully have stumbled upon
a cause of my connection problem. Sudo15 thanks again for your help and perseverance in searching out a solution to this
problem.

• #1437653

Sudo15: Let me begin by apologizing for not indicating at the outset that I also have a Belkin router in my setup.

Two routers in the same network? Do you have DHCP enabled on both?

• #1437349

While I wouldn’t buy a Belkin router, as the other machines are working fine then it probably isn’t the problem.

If you were only using one machine and that had a problem and you are using a separate modem and router, then you would wire directly to the modem to eliminate the router as the cause.

The Energy Efficient Ethernet should be enabled but don’t know about the other two although I would tend to leave those disabled.

I only use a laptop with a 10/100 Ethernet adapter and the EEE setting is in the Advanced section of its Properties rather than just under the Power Management tab for me.

You could try changing your Power Plan to High Performance to see if that would make a difference to possibly the computer switching off the LAN adapter, which could be the reason why the Wired Autoconfig service is cutting out, although I was hoping to see something about it stopping in Event Viewer.

For the Homegroup Log error, I’ve read that unchecking the box for ipv6 in the LAN adapter Properties can sometimes resolve this.

IPv6 being checked can sometimes cause connectivity problems, but they tend to be a all or nothing type of thing and not what I would have expected from the behaviour of Firefox and that could still be a Red Herring ?

To disable ipv6 Open Network and Sharing Center/Change adapter setting then right click on the Ethernet adapter and select Properties which is where you will see the box to uncheck.

The DCOM 10005 could be a Paging File problem, but set to Auto wouldn’t normally cause any problems unless you had a large number of start up programs unnecessarily taking up memory.

Some programs on installation can insert themselves into the Startup menu and these can be checked by going Start, type msconfig then press Enter.

Under the Startup tab you will see the programs that will auto start when you boot up and generally you can disable the lot without any adverse effects.

Under Services and checking the box to Hide all MS services will list some that you can do without and of those I tend to leave the computer and graphic vendor’s alone and disable the various updaters.

For the 0x80041003 error, this MS article suggests that it can be ignored but provides a Fixit which should stop the continued error http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2545227

And this is what I’ve found for the Skydrive which seems to do the job http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skydrive/forum/sdoptions-sdother/session-skydrivesessionname-failed-to-start-with/8454be88-5c95-4204-95cf-2eac6cfb0d2d

When you said that prior to coming here you had tried many suggestions, did that include updating/reinstalling your Ethernet driver ?

• #1437441

Don’t know if you tried, but did you connect to a known working port on the router? May be a broken port.

• #1437445

Sudo15: Lets begin with your statement that you wouldn’t buy a Belkin router? Can you then suggest a quality wireless router?

I re-enabled Energy Efficient Ethernet setting.

I set the Power Plan to ‘High Performance’ then rebooted, but at this juncture haven’t noticed a change?

Tried unchecking ipv6 but that disconnected the Network as shown in the dialog where one would view its status.

I visited the web site that you have provided in regard to Skydrive issue and I made the change; afterwards I
will determine if it has solved the problem.

Yes! I did in fact attempt to update the Ethernet driver and it gave me a message that it was already up to date.

Some additional tests that I have exercised: Tested basic network Connectivity – it passed. 2. tested Network cable-
no cable problems detected. 3. tested Hardware: register, EEPROM, FIFO test, and Loopback test (a) – and all passed.

Looked at ‘Local Area Connection Status’ dialog and it shows Bytes ‘sent’ and ‘received’ and the numbers changed as I
watched???

Of Note: upon first starting the problematic computer today ‘Super AntiSpyware’ program updated the definitions, yet
when I tried Firefox – no joy??

There’s a lot of good advice in this thread, but I can’t see anywhere where we have established a baseline of what the OP’s network configuration is.

Is there an answer to Browni’s question posted here.

If you can post the full result for an ipconfig /all command taken from all workstations when the problem occurs it will help establish a lot of detail and perhaps some obvious things can be ruled out.

Lounge VIP: This should explain why that information was missed. First, the restore point that was available was in the
middle of the period that the intermittent internet connection occurred. The computer in question was a new build,
as I previously stated, in Jan. 2014 and only functioned for a short number of days before the issue arose.

I chose to type it out because I had no other means of providing this information. Perhaps I should have asked just what
pieces of information would have sufficed to save typing the whole thing???

• #1437593

It’s just that I’ve come across a number of threads where people have had problems with Belkin routers but as yours seems to be working fine, then stay with it.

There are two ways to copy & paste the output of an ipconfig /all so that you don’t have to type it out and the easiest one is with the command ipconfig /all > 0 & notepad 0 which auto pastes it into a Notepad doc which you can then copy and paste into the reply box.

The other is to right click in the command window, click on Select all then press Enter and then open Notepad and paste into there.

You could paste that directly into the reply window without pasting it into Notepad, but it is easier to read from the Notepad.

Can you post ipconfig /all from the other machines for comparison, marking which is which.

The ipv4 address of 10.0.0.2 is used by some routers, although I would have expected the Default Gateway to be 10.0.0.1 but Speedtouch use 10.0.0.138 as theirs.

In the Firefox troubleshooting article did you follow the steps to disable ipv6 in FF ?

It may be worth using the Fixit to set ipv4 over ipv6 should your ISP not support ipv6 even though your router does, but go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices/Network adapters and check to see if you have a 6to4 adapter listed.

Windows never has up to date drivers and in the case of self build it’s always best to go to the manufacturer’s site.

CDs supplied with devices don’t always contain up to date drivers and once installed it’s usually best to check for updates.

You can usually use Intel’s auto detect but you will need to download it to another machine and then copy across.

You use the Default Gateway as an URL to gain access to the router and Belkin ship their routers without administrators passwords, unless they changed that but the user manual for your model should give instructions for that.

Edit

Going by http://www.belkin.com/PYRAMID/AdvancedInfo/F5D7632uk4Aver7000/Interfaces/Interface/English/lan_main_0.stm you should have a 192.168.2.1 Default Gateway and your ipv4 address should be similar.

If you have a separate modem and router set up, just wondering if the 10.0.0.138 is from the modem ?

If you can’t log into the router with 10.0.0.138 then try the 192. address.

• #1437569

Thanks rpiz, all the detail is necessary rather than a subset.

A couple of questions:

Are the DHCP lease times as typed?…is there a time as well as a date?…the expiry on the dhcp is the same day as the grant of IP address and that seems a bit short and I wonder if there’s a problem with IP address allocation.

I think you are saying that the output as typed is what you get when the affected machine can’t reach the internet? Can you confirm that is the case, or is it at a time when you do have internet access.

Can you also provide verbatim output from the other machines when the problematic machine does not have internet access?

Perhaps you have already explained earlier, but I can’t see any detail of your router setup? The IP addresses of the client PC, gateway and dhcp server are ok given the subnet mask, but they are a little unusual for a home network.

• #1437584

Tinto Tech: The DHCP expiration dates are as appeared when I entered ‘ipconfig /all’ , and the times were 3:31:21 PM start and 5:31:21 PM
ending.

Yes output is when the affected machine could not connect to the internet.

I have no idea how to gain access to router setup information?

@rpiz:
For time reasons I could not read the whole thread, please accept my apology if I repeat.

I have seen similar behavior many times. One time it was the NIC on the motherboard that had gotten flaky after a close by lightning strike.

All other cases (whether wireless or wired connection) it was that darned new kind of malware that we call PuP.

And the tools that always fixed it are:

[*]ADWCleaner and
[*]JRT
[*]

Hope this helps.

As background, I have a Speedtouch modem along with the Belkin wireless router as my setup.

In the Firefox troubleshooting article I did disable ipv6.

I did in fact search out both .msi downloads, suggested by someone here, and ran both going from ipv4 to ipv6 and then back to ipv4 from ipv6.
After each effort I tested the internet connection, and nothing changed.

Regarding the ‘Intel auto detect’ software I cannot follow through with that one until I have a connection?

Hopefully this information will help with the resolution of my issue?? Again, thanks a bunch for your continued effort.

• #1437678

OK rpiz, thanks for the additional details. I have to go to work soon, so don’t have much time.

The working PC’s are on a completely different subnet and use a different gateway to the problematic machine. I suspect this is getting us closer to the nub of the problem.

You may not know how to access the router configuration, but the data above indicates that the problematic machine is getting a DHCP address from a second router running a different DNS and DHCP server. So, can you describe the exact hardware arrangements as Sudo and Browni suggest: it will help us understand the routing arrangements of the 3 machines.

Some specific questions: where do the two routers connect to eachother, what ethernet ports are connected together on the routers and is there a separate modem, or does the Speedtouch router have a modem too?

• #1437708

Tinto Tech:: I’ll give a run at this, and hopefully it will all make sense?
First of all, the phone line (DSL) enters the Speedtouch 546 modem/router at the DSL port.
Port #3 of the Speedtouch goes to the problematic Windows 7 desktop.
Port #4 of the Speedtouch goes to the wireless Belkin modem.

Belkin Wireless modem:
One lan port goes to printer.
Another lan port goes to NIC card on the Windows XP3 desktop.
And another lan port goes to the laptop computer.

Again, this setup worked, as is, for a long period of time, and after the Windows 7 desktop was built
it functioned fine for a number of weeks. Then something went awry causing intermittent internet connections.

• #1437717

Does the Win 7 desktop work when plugged into the Belkin ?

Can you use one of the working computers to download the Win 7 LAN driver and copy it across using an USB/DVD and have you tried refitting the NIC if a removable card ?

• #1437729

Now given all the posts in this threat, and some of the changes that were made; can I safely reinstall Comodo
firewall to replace Windows firewall? I prefer Comodo firewall and over a few years has served me well. This
then begs the question, just what was the problem in the first place?? I am now nervous in doing much with
this desktop for fear of revisiting the connection problem?

• #1437722

Today at approximately 11:40AM I decided to start the problematic Windows 7 desktop computer, in anticipation
that much more work had to be done in order to fix my intermittent internet connection problem. And to me
astonishment I opened Firefox and it connected and after moving to a number of web sites it remained connected.
At this moment it is 12:51 PM and Firefox is still open and has remained connected the entire time. I am astounded
at this turnaround and can’t even guess what might have solved the problem, assuming it is solved in the long term,
given the huge number of attempts made at different settings, etc.?????? Goodness gracious I can’t thank everyone enough
, again, for their perseverance and patience through this ordeal. I immediately moved these posts to the printable version
and saved a copy so that I can retrace the steps, in the event it happens again. Fortunately, the posts will be available
at Windows Secrets Lounge into the future; but I now have a personal copy.
I wonder, is it possible to reopen this thread if the problem reappears down the road or would I have to re-post all of this again??
Lastly, I again want to thank everyone that has contributed over these past few days, in an effort to solve this problem.

If you make a system Image backup first you should be able to safely tinker with Comodo. If the problem reoccurs, just restore the image.

• #1437776

You can get connectivity problems like this where there’s no logical reason why it occurred or how it fixed itself but we hope it stays fixed.

Change the Wired Autoconfig service back to Manual and see if it continues to work after a reboot, or don’t you want to tempt Fate 🙂

As long as you don’t mark the thread as solved, it will remain open should you need to resurrect it.

• #1442149

I feel obligated to return to the ‘Lounge’ and give an accounting of progress made to solve the intermittent internet issue
given in my initial post. Following the many suggestions offered throughout this thread and my abrupt finding that it
suddenly ended, contributed to the mystery. Subsequently, it re-appeared a couple of times following my last post #49.
I searched and searched for a solution, and on 3/3/14 found that Iobit Antimalware software was causing the problem.
This is not an indictment on Iobit Antimalware software, but rather my failure to adequately search out the proper
setup to prevent conflicts with other software and my system. I uninstalled Iobit software and everything is back
to normal. Thanks again to everyone who extended help throughout this thread.

• #1442165

It’s unusual that conflicts between security programs would cause an intermittent problem as they tend to create a complete block, but glad that you have found the cause.

• #1442228

@rpiz:

Thank you for the enigma’s solution.

I have listed Iobit as a source of “malicious” or at least dubious software like PuPs in my experience based personal list of PuPs. I described here what we are dealing with.
