I received a file this morning with a .MDI extension. Google quickly revealed this is an image format unique to Office 2003 and that MS do not provide a MDI viewer for those of us without their latest whizz bang suite. I also learnt that MDI is supposed to be MS’s answer to PDF but without a viewer??, go figure, anyway I digress…

    in turn gives this link:

to a little utility that opens .mdi files and saves then as a TIF. Don’t be put off by the fact it is in Russian so the menus all appear in funny characters, File | Open and File | Save are pretty obvious.

NB the double f on the default extension (.tiff) confuses some graphics apps, e.g. IrfanView says it’s not a valid format but if you rename the extension to have just a single f then IrfanView will happily open the file.

I’m guessing Free MDI Viewer is the same program. When I d/l fom Winsite and installed, I was given a choice of Spanish & English.

Edited – Maybe not. The one above is a viewer only, no Save options.

I think your commnet in your edit is correct. The Russian only viewer in my post comes in at just over 2Mb whereas the one you’ve found is only about 1Mb
