I have just discovered the “VirtualStore” folder! Running Windows 7 Pro 64
A program that I use (SimSig, a rail signalling simulation, if you are curious) has been saving snapshots in this folder, and it took me a lot of digging to find where these snapshots were being “buried”.
Let me see if I have understood why this is happening. It appears that Windows does not like to have data files saved into system folders such as Program Files (and x86), ProgramData, and Windows, and forces the creation of replica folders under C:UsersAppDataLocalVirtualStore. Placing these data files there does not violate security permissions on the “real” versions of the folders. When I go looking for my recent snapshots in the file manager of this program, it does not find them, and offers a totally different set of snapshots instead, from over year back.
What could I do about this? If I don’t like this behaviour, I could change the permissions on the “real” versions of these folders, but this is strongly NOT recommended on security grounds.
Has this behaviour changed in Windows, perhaps with a recent program patch?
