After seeing Joe’s update notice for VLC player and having been in discussions here about 3-party media players to be able to play all the various media type files out there which WMP is weak on, e.g., .flv, .mov, .rmx, etc. I thought I would share something which I am thrilled with. To put it short and sweet, I no longer have nor need ANY other media player other than the default Windows Media Player (version 11 in Vista) to play media files; audio or video. “So, how can that be?”, you ask!
I discovered (okay this may be old news to some/most of you) Vista Codec Package. No configuration was necessary on my end. I just installed it and it played everything I could find on my system and those on my wife’s MAC. Oh, and it is 100% ; no nags, no ads, no calling home, no trial limitations, etc.
Now, as good as this package is the same cannot be said for the website. I found it horribly confusing and most difficult to find a legitimate download link amidst all the other ads and download links. So, once you have visited the website to read about Vista Codec Package (works on Vista and XP), and you can’t find the link to download this latest version 5.4.5, which is near the bottom by clicking the “Major Geeks” image, here is the direct download link: Vista Codec Package on Major Geeks
