Do I need Visual Studio (.NET or other version) before I can use Visual Studio Tools for Office? I think I need the Visual Studio Tools to get things like the Access runtime version, but the installation instructions for VST on the MS website say that Visual Studio .NET is a prerequisite for installing VST.

According to How to Buy Microsoft Developer Products: Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office System, you need one of the .Net developer tools; Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Standard Edition is included with VSTO, so you don’t need to buy Visual Studio .Net separately (unless you prefer to do so, of course).

Actually, all you need is a qualifying product. I had both XP Office Developer and VB6 Pro on my machine, and VSTO installed without a whimper.

I got VSTO as a freebie for atttending a long marketing demo. There is a completely separate CD labeled “Access 2003 Developer Extensions,” which probably can be installed without installing the Visual Studio tools CD… okay, I don’t know. grin

Added: The package I got included Visual Basic .NET and three MSDN CDs. I don’t know if this is typical or was a special package for the event I attended.

Nope, the extensions are *part* of the VSTO. You have to install VSTO to use them. The VS.Net help is all on the MSDN disks.
