W 7 disk on 2 computers?

Bear with me, please, I’m not a techie! We have a Dell laptop that has a W 7 reinstall disk that came with it. It was used on the laptop after our son wiped it and reinstalled W 7 to give us the laptop. I read in a MS forum that a disk can be used on a desktop as well as on one portable machine. I want to know if that’s true, and if I can use the laptop’s W 7 reinstall disk on the W 7 desktop (to reinstall 7 on the latter)? The desktop is having some problems. Hope I’ve made the question clear. Thanks
