• W10 2004 Update on Surface Laptop 3

Just got a new Surface Laptop 3 as Costco had it on sale for $300 off. I7, 16 gig, 256 gig SSD. Set up the machine by powering on for the first time. Nothing installed other than W10 and the junk that comes with W10.

Update 2004 to W10 will NOT install. A clean machine. A Microsoft product. Does anyone in Microsoft actually use their own hardware to do ANY testing?

Microsoft has seriously borked the 2004 update to W10. If the option to install the update is not offered, don’t force it. Microsoft code knows something is wrong and will not make the update available.

What method did you use to install 2004 ? Windows Update ? MCT ? manually from ISO ?

I used the Windows Update Assistant, downloaded from Microsoft from their website Windows 10 Update at the address in the link. I have the ISO (for bare metal systems) on a thumb drive but the above link will basically do the same task. Confirmation system has memory and other resources, downloads, verifies, does the setup then aborts backing out the changes.

Using Settings and Windows Update does not show 2004 as being available. So even Microsoft’s own devices and hardware are having an issue with the update. I have updated my desktop and a couple of systems in another location. At least nothing was damaged in the attempt to force the update.

speaking of the MCT, Alex5723, the 2004 MCT now downloads the July 2020 refreshed ESD installation v2004 images with build 19041.388 (KB4565503 update integrated)

Win10 update assistant still downloads the older 2004 ISOs with build 19041.264 but the MCT app and MSDN users recently get the newer refreshed 2004 ISO images with .388 (though still missing the defrag/optimization fix)

I’m gonna reinstall win10 v2004 on one of my PCs running Win10 education v2004 with the newly refreshed ISO/ESD images with build 19041.388 (doing a repair or refresh install, keeping existing files & apps and not doing a clean install)
