I’m very new to web site design in general as well as FrontPage. I’ve been opening my web off the web server and making modifications “online”. What is the best way to save (or download/backup) the web on my local machine? The only copy of the site is on my providers server. Is it best to open the web as I am from the web server or should I keep it local, make modifications and then publish to the web server? Thanks.

I would say, keep it local.
This allows you to modify to your hearts content without needing access to your ISP, you can create local backups, and FP only needs to upload changes as and when you make them.
(And what happens if your ISP’s server crashes and they lose all your data…?)

Thanks. I agree. What do you suggest as the best way to download or save the files from my web server to my local machine?

File > New > Page or Web…
This opens the ‘Open a page’ panel on the right
Select: Empty Web
The Web Site Templates window opens up – Select ‘Import Web Wizard’
and that should allow you to specify the URL of your web.

This is not something I have actually done myself – do a search for ‘import web’ in the Help field top right of FP for the MS instructions.

Make sure to test. The import wizard in FP2000 failed to retrieve certain elements that were referenced in JavaScript. For example, on our site, when you mouseover a button a “brighter” image is displayed. In the imported web, the all-too-familiar red-X-on-white-box displayed in its place. We had to manually download a bunch of stuff to synchronize the two.

My method:

Open the web site on the server and then ‘Pubish’ to a folder on my local machine.
