Hello fellow loungers, I hope this post is submitted to the correct section, if not please re-locate it. A dear friend of mine is having problems updating a web site she maintains, I recommended this forum to her but despite repeated attempts she has had no joy so far so she has asked me to forward her email which follows here: – Regards Dave.

I wonder if you would be so kind as to put the following question to Woody’s Lounge:
In May 2007 I successfully uploaded a website using Dreamweaver 4. In January this year I changed two pages but have had considerable difficulty trying to upload them and have not been successful in doing so. I have spent about three hours talking to representatives of 1&1 but the site will not upload. I seem to think we are not connecting to the web space. When I have uploaded sites using Terrapin FTP it says upload@ntlworld.com and the wizard takes you to your website address but there is no such facility on Dreamweaver for 1&1, or if there is I have failed to find it. Could someone supply detailed step by step instructions to overcome the problem I have?
Thank you David. I have tried to sign up with Woody’s Lounge but am still waiting to hear from them and I am getting desperate over this website as you can imagine.

    Talk to you soon.

      David,

We had conversation about this on a private email and I honestly think it best that you speak directly to NTLWorld as it is the way they set up the web pages using frames. There is probably nothing we can advise you here as it is the functionality of the service provider.

My top tip is NOT to use Dreamweaver as you FTP client but to use Terrapin (as mentioned) or Filezilla free.

I also advise that she goes to the NTLWorld help files and gets information about the FTP client they suggest.

Thanks Jerry I will simply forward your reply to my friend as it is completely out of my remit but thanks for the response anyway. Regards Dave.

I know zero about publishing sites with DreamWeaver. However, if the site is hosted on 1&1, the FTP software could be configured to publish files there. 1&1 gives FTP info in the administrative control panel. The password appears in the FTP section and the instructions are in the FAQs.

Regarding signing up for the Lounge, it is automated, so perhaps her spam filter caught the email back.

Thanks again, I will forward your remarks to my friend as they could just include a small clue that points her in the right direction. Regards Dave.

Sorry to protract this thread but it seems the comments thus far have failed to enlighten my friend who is totally frustrated with the problem regarding the updating of a web site she maintains. I am well aware that the policy is to KEEP ALL THREADS WITHIN THE LOUNGE but seeing the problem is unlikely to relate to the vast majority of readers, would someone with expert knowledge of web site maintenance be so kind as to communicate privately with my friend with a view to resolving her problem. Below is her latest response to brief comments offered by loungers thus far. Thanks in advance Dave.

Thank you for posting my question but somewhere along the way the point was missed. I successfully use Terrapin to upload to NTL sites (yours and mine). Terrapin is not compatible with the 1&1 web space for Lisa’s site therefore I had to use Dreamweaver 4 and this is the problem. Somehow Dreamweaver 4 is not connecting to the 1&1 web space. Could you ask again if anyone knows how to upload using Dreamweaver 4?
          This is a challenge!!!

            Dave,

Send your friend these instructions. If they are not helpful tell her to try this Google search. HTH

So this is a specific question about Dreamweaver then.

Point your friend to Dreamweaver FTP Tutorial

This is a very good tutorial her questions about uploading to a specific site on 1&1 web space should be directed to them. However the problem is probably caused by the fact you have a web site called:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ censored/index.html and this page is framed within the other other site, has she tried loading to NTL World? (I have censored the site folder for your privacy). I stress This is not an issue for a “vast amount of readers” this is an issue with you, your web mistress and your web host

As another alternative to using Dreamweaver, 1&1 hosting accounts include a free license to an older version of the WiseFTP program by AceBit (download from the control panel). If the user cannot FTP to her 1&1 account with that software, she should try 1&1 support.

…somewhere along the way the point was missed…

[/indent]One obvious thing that occurs to me is that you probably should suggest to your friend that she JOIN us here in The Lounge! That way at least she can deal with us directly and not have to use you as a middle man, possibly losing something in the process.

Hi Big Al point taken, a logical conclusion but seeing I recommended the lounge to her even before she encountered the problem and subsequently she has tried to register more than once but never receives a password she sort of resorted to second best by asking me to submit the question. That’s why I resorted to copying her emails verbatim into my posts as I would certainly not know how to explain the problem. It was suggested to me by another lounger that perhaps the security settings on her computer are blocking the incoming password so that may need adjusting. In light of that last comment Al, what is the address from which the password is sent as I suppose adding it to her address book should allow it through!!! Regards Dave.

The sender of Lounge e-mails is LoungeAdmin@wopr.com.
(Do you know under which name(s) she tried to register?)

            • #1095018

Hello Hans, No, I’m sorry the simple answer is my friend made no reference to any of the personal details she used to register and with reference to the “Senders” address you gave, I thought before forwarding it to my friend I would try entering it into my address book but it was rejected as not being valid. (see attachment) Why would it’s validity be questioned? Just curious. I have informed her of the various posts made on the lounge regarding the problem so I expect she will probably have a read of them and the tutorials recommended. Incidentally, she spent two years at university studying I.T. and is certainly well qualified so it is puzzling why she can’t get to the bottom of this glitch even after spending ages on the phone to One & One and ( I think) ntl – now Virgin Media – as well. . Thanks again for your generous help. Dave.

              The address is LoungeAdmin@wopr.com

There should *not* be a point after .com (the point/period in my post was the end of the sentence)

            • #1095020

              Dave

You have a full stop at the end of the address, it is

              LoungeAdmin@wopr.com

The address books (and some websites check) that there is a commercial AT (@) and a fullstop in the email address, it obviously doesn’t like the fullstop at the end
