I just purchased a new ASUS A7A266 motherboard with a 1.2GHz processor. I installed it and all the components in my existing case, with a 250w power supply.

I can enter the BIOS setup using the DEL key, but once there, the keyboard does not respond, although it did at first. I have tried two different keyboards, a Microsoft natural and a generic 102 key model, both known to work on my other bench system. The keyboard connector does not seem to fit snugly so I am leaning towards a defective motherboard socket – but is there a way I can verify this?

I also found it interesting that the DEL key consistently works but I lose functionality in the BIOS, wnd the Windows 2000 boot menu, nor any other OS (Windows 98, DOS) outside of the BIOS even acknowledges my input.

Yessir, you have a bad socket. The clues? new motherboard, DEL key works, but none others… Bad Socket! get her fixed!

Thanks tons – after the run of black cats, broken mirrors and cracks in the sidewalk that I have had with this particular machine, it’s comforting to know that I’m NOT losing my mind and that it IS someone else’s fault… wink

I thought the first rule of IT support was to not answer the phone! No, wait. Maybe it’s to always blame it on software.

Phone!?! What phone?…Oh, I thought was tinnitus!

You don’t blame software, its just a new world standard, or undocumented feature.
