Please kindly assist. I have file “nmdsdcid” appeared on my external harddrive that I
use to do my macrium backups. What is this file, I assume it has nothing to do with the
backup itself, or am I mistaken? Can I delete this file?

Not sure but it used to be that backup programs stored a ‘catalog’ of their backup, lose that and it took a long time to rebuild it. Might be what Macrium uses.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

I use the paid version of Macrium, and I don’t have that file on my system.

Googling it, every hit comes up associating it with MP3 player file, here is one url: http://nmdsdcid.fileextensionguide.com/
Out of curiosity, have you backed up your cell phone music files to your computer, or some other type of MP3 player music files?

This is the first time I have seen this file on my Macrium backups. This file was created prior to
the backup of the 8 March. I don’t have music files on my cell phone. Just curious as to why this
is created on the external hard drive as this never happened on previous backups.

This small program should allow you to see what’s in the file.

Install the program. Run it. Drag the target file onto it. File opens and you can examine the contents. Note that some AV programs flag ResHacker as suspicious because of the way it works, but it is safe to install. Works on all versions of Windows.

When I try I get error message “This is not a Win32 executable file.”

When you right click on it does it give anything in its Properties ?

Don’t know if you want to remove all of the files and do the back up again to see if it reappears ?

I have found that with any external hard drive connected, and I open my Nero Media Home, the “nmdsdcid” file
is created on the external hard drive. So it appears this file has nothing to do with Macrium. Why this occurs I
        have no idea.

It’s probably a Nero file to lock the settings then.

On Cruzer Flash sticks they usually have some of their own software preinstalled – perhaps this is similar ?

Just a thought – have you tried double clicking on it ?

      • #1494309

If I double click on it it shows “Choose the program you want to use to open this file.”
        But nothing opens it.

Well, at least you’ve found its source and would seem to apply. http://www.filesuffix.com/en/extension/nmdsdcid
