What is idwutil_600.exe?

My PC seems to be running much slower than usual tonight and one of the busiest programs in Task Explorer is idwutil_600.exe. When I google that name I get lots of entries that don’t seem to come to any conclusion. I’m wondering if anyone here has any idea what that program is for or if it is good or bad.

What folder is it in? Right click the name in task manager and select “open file location”.

idwutil_600.exe is associated with IDrive. Run a malware scan. If idwutil_600.exe is using too much CPU or too much memory in your system, it is possible that your file has been infected with a virus.

OK, I use iDrive for my backups so I’m all set now.

Sorry to be so late in replying but I’ve been doing some virus scans and the last one took about 36 hours to complete!

Hi Bill, Happy 4th!

I ask out of curiosity….. where does iDrive store your backups?
And, how do you access those backups, to restore your computer to original condition when your hard drive crashes and can no longer boot up your computer?

I know how I deal with that scenario, but how do you?

iDrive is very similar to Carbonite. They both store the backup on their own servers online. iDrive saves at least two most recent versions of each file, I believe, except where the file hasn’t been changed since the addition of iDrive. They both do their backups in real time if you set the choices that way. The biggest difference in the two services is that iDrive will allow more than one computer to the backed up into the same iDrive account where Carbonite charges more for backing up two computers. iDrive allows me to backup up to 1TB of data on the normal account and that is much more than I need.

I have not had to do a restore yet but I can go into my account online and see the folder names that I have on my PC and I believe I would be able to restore a whole folder or individual files if that was needed. And, they could be restored to their original location or to a new location.

I used Carbonite for a couple of years before I became aware of iDrive and I like some of the characteristics of Carbonite the best but I switched to save a little bit of money.
