I was just wondering what job titles people held that use Excel regularly. I’m kind of at a crossroads right now of where I want my career to go, and just wondered what kinds of positions were available that use excel extensively.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerMarch 6, 2003 at 9:39 pm #659301My title is “Senior Scientist”. I am a PhD chemist with Bayer Polymers. I develop Polyurethane formulations for Appliance (Refrigerator / Water Heater) Insulation.
We use excel for many things: databasing, data analysis, charting, scenario modeling, etc. Not a lot of excel-application development, but many with macros to aid in “user-friendliness”.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 6, 2003 at 10:30 pm #659320I’m a Senior Software Engineer at MTL Systems, plus teach at a Community College. Been coding since you had to do it with wires on an analog machine. Our company collects tons of information about the properties of different materials. Currently, 90% of the data collection, QC, analysis, and delivery is done with Excel, and with the amount of data processed, most everything is automated with VBA code. You would not want to be just an expert in Excel: it could be replaced at any time. Seven years ago, I did most everthing in Fortran with my own plot package. If Kevin has his way, next year I’ll have to rewrite everything in C#. I think that it is better to have a non-computer related degree, math for me, chem for Steve, MBA (I think) for John, and also be excellent in computer programming, because, as I am want to say, there are three things that are not here to stay: computers, cars, and lawn-mowers! And, no I do not know what will replace them, just hope it happens soon. –Sam

AskWoody LoungerMarch 7, 2003 at 12:26 am #659339Good Point, Sam, about “excel expert”.
I use excel, but was not hired for my excel skills. We rarely used computers when I started. I played a little thru several version of Lotus 123 and learned excel when it became our “standard”. If excel goes away, something better comes along, or our company changes standards, I can and will learn something new.
Excel is just one of the tools I use to do my development.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 7, 2003 at 5:32 am #659389Like the others, I have a real life besides my Excel life .
I’m a (chemical) process engineer who happens to like spreadsheets in general. Since my employer uses XL, I do too. And since I won’t put up with it’s peculiarities (MS calls these “features”
) I do quite some programming in it to make it do things my way.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 7, 2003 at 9:26 pm #659668I am a senior (media) analyst with a major wireless provider. I use Excel 90% of the time and MS Access the rest of the time. When I started three years ago I had NO experience with Excel. But I did learn a little Fortran IV on an IBM 360 – probably before some of this list were born. LOL
As for education, I have a BS in Math (in the days before handheld calculators, and I didn’t know how to use a slide rule!), MA in National Security Affairs, MDiv in Theology, and STM in Exegetical Theology.
