I am buying a new Dell desktop. Are there any recommendations for what order I should take for setting up the PC? I will be installing the following software: Macrium Reflect; Norton Internet Security; Malwarebytes; NordVPN; MS Office Home & Student. At what point should I run the updates? At what point should I do a full backup? At what point should I connect to the internet?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

ManagerMarch 16, 2020 at 7:44 pm #2201215You should order it with Win10 Pro. not Home.
Initial setup offline/disconnected from the Interned. If you are connected you will be forced to create a Microsoft ID.
Login with a Local ID.
Say no when it asks you to update (you are not connected).
Once logged in – set up Windows Update so you can update when you want to.
Go through the Settings App, item by item, and set it for the level of privacy you desire.
Go through the Control Panel and do the same thing.
Make a Windows Rescue disk/USB
Make a Rescue disk/USB for your backup software. Make a full disk image backup – this is your base.Connect to the Internet.
Once you go online, you can install the updates and the third-party s/w.
When you get the PC set up like you want, make another full disk image backup.1 user thanked author for this post.

GuestMarch 29, 2020 at 1:11 am #2212048Thank you for response to my question. I need to clarify one thing. You indicate making a rescue disk/USB for my backup software, and then a full backup before connecting to the internet. But I need to connect to the internet to download and install Norton and Macrium, which would be my first two software installs. Would you agree that is a proper order?
