What version of W10 will I get for upgrading Windows 7 Ultimate? I am assuming it will be along the lines of Professional (like W8.1) but would like some clarification.

Good question and an answer would be “Who knows”. There’s lots known about Win10 but what I see is there’s still lots either unknown or still under development, probably will have to hope there’s a RC/Release Candidate version as we’ve seen in past versions but again, Who knows. The final version is probably still a few months away.

Yeah I figured that, but I would like to know if I am being shafted…I like W7 ultimate, but I also like the technical preview so far, and would love to have the full “ultimate” version of that also (whatever it may include). Here is to hoping!

I’ve seen nothing in all the articles about whether there will be versions such as Pro, Ultimate, etc. with the upgrade. My take on all that has been announced is that it will be a “Universal” release, but it would be nice to know if the upgrade replaces the same “version” that you are upgrading. There was mention of business versions so that IT departments could test updates before downloading to all machines on a network.
I’m would think that there will be some kind of coverage on this question before the official release.

Update: Actually I was just looking at this post http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread//166595-Win-10-Build-9926-IE-Search-Provider-bug and the first post has 2 screen shots of Ricks desktop and it shows Windows 10 Pro Preview.

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂

This is just my 2 cents….since the inception of windows 8 there has only been 2 versions of the OS…8 and 8 Pro as well as 8.1. If MS follows suite it should be the same setup….windows 10 and 10 pro.

I don’t know of anybody who had 7 ultimate and upgraded to 8 to know what version of 8 they got….8 or Pro.

Note that the Windows 10 preview comes in two versions – Pro and Enterprise. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the way Windows 10 is released.

Windows 7 Starter, Home and Home Premium just got Windows 8 (if you did a bog standard upgrade)
Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate got Windows 8 Pro (if you did a bog standard upgrade)
Windows 7 Professional and Enterprise got Windows 8 Enterprise (if you did a business upgrade)

All versions of 7 however were available to go to Windows 8 Pro if you paid extra for the home, home premium and starter versions.

This shows that Windows 8.1 is only available as Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 8.1 Enterprise so I wouldn’t be surprised to see no difference in offerings with Win10:

What I’ve read about Windows RT 8.1 is that only programs from Windows Store will work on it.

I do not having a working ESata connection at this time(got a replacement dock but now the front panel is flakey) so I can’t check for myself. Does theW10 Pro have Group Policy editor?
