What version of 1709 will I get through "Update Assistant"?

I’m on Windows 10 1703, and religiously following Woody’s MS-DEFCON but…

Soon 1803 will be released, so how and when should I get 1709 installed (presuming that is the best way forward)?

I had thought that if I had a recent “Update Assistant”version of 1709 downloaded and ready, I could have a better choice of when to install it.

What’s the best way forward?

Your probably going to have to move fairly quick, next couple of weeks for sure as the lead topic about a “watermark” free beta normally means 1803 is in the wings and they normally upgrade the update version either on the make .iso or the upgrade assistant the same day or day after. Its probably right now at 1709 although I got mine last December. I normally get the .iso version for recovery and the inevitable issues etc and you can use it for an upgrade install from the Desktop as well. I have little trust of the upgrade assistant, not since it told me a few years back that a machine could update and clearly it was way to old. 😉

I did this a few days ago during testing using the download from https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=799445. I believe that you will get the same file if you follow this tutorial. A different link that abbodi86 mentioned is https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=760799. It currently downloads the same file (but with a different name) as the first link that I mentioned. If I recall, the download from https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=799445 installs the Windows 10 Update Assistant but does not include any of the potentially unwanted “forced update” stuff. I ended up with build 16299.125, with these 5 updates already installed (some of them installed dynamically because I had internet access enabled during the upgrade): https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/report-win10-users-being-pushed-onto-1709-even-if-they-have-feature-updates-deferred/#post-173742.

Another option: I’ve used this program to legally download Windows from Microsoft’s servers: https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool.

In my opinion you shouldn’t rush to install 1709 which is so unstable.  I would skip this version and install 1803 when its stable and approved by Woody.

Just someone who don't want Windows to mess with its computer.

I’m new here and not sure how or where to ask a question.
I have an HP laptop and like so many when the windows 10 update 1709 came in, it says it failed to load, however in my system, it says its added.   My laptop will no longer add any other updates. They all fail.  I’ve tried shutting off my Norton to add them -tried going to the Microsoft site and adding them, and adding the Microsoft installer. Nothing has helped.

The last updated I had successfully was on 1/25/18  KB5056892

Failed ones in Feb and March are

KB4090913

KB4088776

Thank each of you for your quick response. I’ll give the suggestions a try and hope its a fix. I’m not too computer knowledgeable so it takes me a while to do such tasks.  Thank you again.

BobbyB, I was thinking of being prepared in case they ‘pull’ the 1709 .iso, but thanks to MrBrian it seems that the iso will be available through HeiDoc.net.

I ran HeiDoc’s program to check it out and despite me confirming I didn’t want to use my resources for the program, a little later it was using 9-10% cpu? Hmm?

Zaphyrus, If Woody says nogo to 1709, I’ll follow his advice.

So, I guess my conclusion is to not worry about the download (yet) and wait for Woody.

well for now 1709 isn’t stable yet. so upgrading now will be a problem.

About Woody’s approval, as long as I have a supported version I don’t think I will have a problem, I already asked advice and Miss.Susan say it was ok, as long as you have 1703 (which is the version I have) since its a supported version.

if you have 1607 you should upgrade to 1709

I will wait for 1803 to be approved by Woody so I will skip 1709 and jump to 1803 when its stable.

I’ve got 1703 too Zaphyrus, and I’m happy to wait. (My wife’s ancient Dell desktop – almost 9 years old) is on 1709 and she’s happy with browsing, word processing.)

I am happy to hear that your wife doesn’t have any problem with 1709,

(I on other hand, will never know if 1709 will mess my computer, so with each month where there was an issue with 1709 I lost bit by bit my faith in the reliability of that update so I  will play the safe road, which is to wait for 1803.)

In the end, I believe that woody will advice to skip 1709 if 1709’s updates dont get better soon.

So well, I am happy you will wait too, after all we have until October 10 to upgrade, lets hope Windows works hard in 1803.

Thank each of you for your replies. I’m new here and not sure how it all works yet.
My laptop says it didn’t update to 1709,  however when I go to where Woody told me to look at my system, it says its running 1709.  Has anyone has this issue and does that mean it did update and something is buggy about it ?

One more question – Am I confused on the numbers ? I thought y KB4074588 was 1709. Is KB4074588 the one  before 1709. The last one I have that actually updated was KB405682 on 1/25/18 but my computer says its running 1709 when I check the system.  Thank you so very much.

this is just something I heard, so take it with a grain of salt.there was an issue with WU that reports sucessful updates as failed (1709)

Yes, as Zaphyrus says, there’s a known bug with 1709 saying it didn’t install recent updates when in fact it did. Look at the bottom of this:

I want to give a huge thank you to each of you who’ve offered up help to me.  Last night, I removed some of the updates that downloaded but never actually updated. After doing that, my laptop began to load the new Windows 10 1803 version. So far its doing well, so keep your fingers crossed that it will now update when one comes along.   I know so little about computers so your help and patience is greatly appreciated.

My wife is having   no issues with W10 Pro 1803 (!) She’s had it for the past week now and surfs fine with no conflicts etc. I let her have the update as we we are thinking of upgrading her laptop & thought [edited], lets see what it does for future reference anyway & if she blows; then we will upgrade – simple. Im still on W7 Ultimate  64bit 8GB RAM on HP Elitebook 8570P. Now I’m keen to see how mum levels out on her 1803 version … (Hmmm he says…EOL Jan 2020 …)
