What would it cost to upgrade every PC currently running XP to Windows 7?

Not a day goes by that we are not reminded that support for XP will end soon. I would like to know just how much it would cost to upgrade every XP machine in the world. Disregard the cost of downtime, upgrade installation, and training for users on the upgraded OS. Disregard the cost of any required hardware upgrades. I simply want to know what would be the total cost for ever user in the world currently running XP, to buy the upgrade to Windows 7. What is the worldwide grand total?

Hello…. I don’t think that it would be possible to even take a “WAG” at it …as there are too many variables .. Nevertheless SeeThis and you might be able to get some idea ,considering that the cost for a Win 7 disk, (not upgrade) would be about 100$-200$ Depending on the version:cheers: Regards Fred

A lot if they are using 16 bit programs and they want to use 64 bit machines. I think M$ will be forced to extend the deadline because of all of the businesses using 32 bit machines alone! After all, M$ is influenced more by businesses than private users and 1/3 of businesses are still running them.

I doubt that M$ really cares about the users/businesses still running XP (except to the extent they will pay for upgrades). But if Microsoft really wanted to put the final nail in XP’s coffin, they could upgrade all XP users to Win7 at no cost. They could incorporate it into a Windows XP security update; add an item to the Start menu to ‘Download and Install Upgrade to Windows 7‘. This would ensure that the offer was made to all current XP users, and ONLY to current XP users. (At least to all who were keeping their XP systems up to date.)

It’s not quite as simple (simple!) as that, since many PCs running XP would have insufficient CPU Power and/or memory and/or hard disk space to run Windows 7. I have had to recycle about 20% of our stock of PCs (the oldest 20%, largely) for one or more of those reasons.
(And, yes, I do know that I can usually add memory up to the limit allowed by the motherboard!)

Must be some pretty anemic systems then, not enough hard disk space takes it back a decade or more eh? Through experimentation I find Win 7 runs well on anything from single core 1.67Ghz and 1 G RAM and a half decent video card, GT8600 say. Depending on what sort of programs one wants or needs to run on those antiques though would greatly influence that stand alone performance.

It’s estimated there are perhaps 550 million systems running XP at the moment so calculate whatever mean cost per upgrade t get that base figure. A lot of these would be businesses so volume licensing would come into play on some.

Old Dell Optiplexes, mainly. We replace them with 4-5 year old Optiplexes!

I have Windows 7 running on a 10-year old Dell Latitude D800 with a Pentium M 1.4GHz and 2GB RAM. I did have to Vista-ize the graphics driver, but that was the only finagling I had to do. Of course, I still dual boot XP SP3 on that laptop.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

We were all once "Average Users".

That is a great question. Makes me wonder if outfits such as SCO UNIX, Santa Cruz Operations, plays similar obsolescence games, or are their (many, many, many) clients safe within reason?

Hackers in general seem to enjoy messing with MS?

Ever heard of the exploit on CDC and Cray mainframes, the “What’s your Vector, Victor?” Virus?

Nah, I didn’t think so.

I will soon be upgrading to w7 after much procrastination. CHANGE, HO!

You may want to consider Win 8 rather than Win 7. With the various methods available you can get Win 8 to act and look like any version from XP onward. Just my opinion. Seems that Win 8 32 Bit runs some old 16 bit apps better than Win 7 32 Bit and has a larger driver base for older H/W. Plus you get all the arguments about speed and security. I will not rehash those. If you do have any older 16 Bit apps, you might want to consider this.

I would have to say,.considering the likelyhood of the disruption of your system’s usability due to the mandated “improvements”, the cost will be more that you will ever know.
