I have noticed that there are a fairly large number of things which can cause a report to hang. That is you see the status bar say, “Formatting page, press Ctrl+Break to stop …”. And it just sits there. One cause can be that you don’t have a printer configured. I have seen this twice in one week under entirely different circumstances. I have seen some other cases involving sub-reports and oddly formatted fields reported in TechNet.
But I have found another more troubling case, and I am wondering how many people have run into it? The point is maybe we could have those Sharp People at Microsoft be real heros.
The case is when a field on a report cannot be printed on one page. The easiest way to make this happen is to make a narrow memo field on a report, and then put a lot of text into the memo field. The real world case occurs with Sarbains-Oxley (SOX) reporting. Think about it. If people have to really say what they really are doing, good enough isn’t good enough for very long.
Now that I am aware of the problem, I can figure a number of ways around it. But how many people have to fall into the HOLE?
