My local indep. computer shop made me a custom link that’s pinned to the taskbar and shuts the computer down in 1 click, instead of my having to click on the Start Menu, click on Power, then Shut Down. That’s hard for me to do because I have tremor and moving the mouse a short distance accurately is harder that moving a long distance. (Don’t ask why; that’s just the way it is.) I want to copy it to my other computers, but I have no idea where that shortcut lives, and I’m afraid to unpin it fom the taskbar, in case that simply makes it disappear.

    Can anyone help? TIA

Here’s the information you need to create shortcuts for Shutdown, Restart, Log Off, and Lock the computer.

      Shutdown: Target = C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00. Start In = C:\Windows\System32\

      Restart: Target = C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00. Start In = C:\Windows\System32\

      Log Off: Target = C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -L. Start In = C:\Windows\System32

      Lock: Target = C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation. Start In = C:\Windows\System32\

      Hope this helps.

Thank you! Now I don’t have to copy/paste. I’ll save this info on all 3 computers

areader: There are two solutions to this:
A – For the location of this shortcut, see here. Use any method you want to copy it from one computer to another. Note that if there are multiple user logons on a computer, that this must be in the AppData… for every user who wants it.

B – Would you prefer to go through the process of creating the shortcut yourself on each computer? If so, please ask; there are multiple steps.

Thank you. I’m very happy with the info in other replies. I’ve found my shortcut and have copied it for safekeeping and will also put it on the other computers.

I’d like to know why creating it is a multistep process. Don’t you just click on new/shortcut, paste in that location, and save? I already know where the icon I want is, so that’s not a problem.

Try this, r/click an empty space on the Desktop > New > Shortcut.
Type (or copy then paste) into the Location field the following:

      %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0

. . . Next > Rename if you want (I always change the first letter to a capital) > Finish.
Now r/click the new ‘Shutdown’ shortcut > Properties > Change Icon > OK > Select an appropriate icon > OK > OK.
Now drag it to the Taskbar and reposition as required.

      For Restart:

      %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /r /t 0
