So yes, I am going to bite the bullet and get a Windows 10 computer. I will do this on Ebay which is how I have successfully bought all my windows computers (7, xp, nt, 97!) I don’t care about bells and whistles. Mainly I would like for it to still have updates available and have a reasonable track record of stability. I realize that this may be asking too much. Perhaps the least bad version is a better way to approach the issue. I know absolutely nothing. Thanks! Btw I usually buy used lightweight laptops. I will consider a desktop, etc, if it makes a difference, but at this point I am just asking about the OS. thanks!

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody PlusDecember 14, 2020 at 5:37 pm #2319611Windows 10 Pro is the recommended version by Susan Bradley and others, myself included. So far Pro has better/easier ways of keeping unwanted updates from installing by using Group Policy.
Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does ๐

AskWoody LoungerDecember 14, 2020 at 10:23 pm #2319671Terminology can be ambiguous –
Version – Basically, Windows now is Version 10. Previous: 7, Vista, XP, …
But, within 10, there are versions: 20H2, 2004, 1909, 1903, …, 1511, 1507.
— nominal yymm of release, which may not represent the month of actual availability.
— (Subversions, perhaps?)
Editions – Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Server, …
Build – string-of-digits.another-string – development numbersReferences:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10_version_history
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/WindowsForBusiness/Compare
Do Searches on these terms.Don’t bite too quickly. Read a couple of weeks here to get comments on the flavors. I understand that 1909 is still the latest ‘recommended’ (here). 2004 isn’t quite stable enough yet. 20H2 needs to cook longer. By all means, if you are buying used, understand the implications of what updating you’ll be needing to do.
See this index, in particular 2000016.

AskWoody MVPDecember 15, 2020 at 12:49 am #2319703As you are buying a used PC you do not need to buy W10 – save some money for an external backup disk.
If the PC you buy has Window 7 or 8, you can upgrade it to W10 free.If you are buying W10, you can save money by getting the Home edition. You can still control updates via “metered” and one of the free update managers.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 15, 2020 at 4:53 pm #2319913Your question was about Windows 10, but if buying a used PC there are a couple of other things to be aware of.ย Preferably it should have at least 8 GB of memory, or can be expanded to that, and make sure it is 64 bit architecture, not 32 bit as may be the case with an older PC.
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit 20H2
