The wife restarted her machine, the screen went all white. We waited until the drive light quick quick flashing. Powered down (Forced) and then did a start, and the screen was white and then the screen is wentblack. Put my monitor on her system no problem, but now with it on my machine I get the black with her monitor.
We went and bought a new one, any thoughts as what would make a monitor go just like that?

The old one is a Viewsonic VA730m

Was it still under warranty ??? I’d return it to the store and pitch a fit, or contact Viewsonic about it. Had to be a manufacturing defect.

At the top of the list of failures for the monitor is a bad backlight system. These monitors typically have a long life bulb(a), on the order of 40,000 hours, so while the lamp may have become defective it is not the most likely suspect. That honor goes to the fluorescent lamp power supply and its connections to the lamp. These displays typically have 3-year warranties so you should be able to get a replacement display depending on the retailer from whom you bought it.

It is also possible that the power unit for the entire display gave up the ghost. One thing you might try is to get a moving image (youtube video or some other changing source) delivered from your computer to the display. Then shine a high intensity flash light on the screen, perhaps at grazing incidence, and looking closely at the screen see if you can pick up any sign of life in the pixels. If yes, then the display power supply and its electronics are probably working and your backlight system is the problem.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

“PS: smart move giving your wife the good display ”

But we could NOT find a good 17 screen, so she kept mine and I got the new one a LG 17 wide screen. smile
The wife does NOT even like the wide screens.

We later remember that we bought it in January and the one year is up. sad

Try contacting Viewsonic customer service and requesting an accomodation based on the situation. They should want to help you out just to maintain their reputation. Won’t cost them anything (relatively speaking) to make you happy here and it should be worth the good publicity vs. the bad rap of sticking a customer with a monitor that failed due to a manufacturing defect 1 month after the warranty expired.

Well we had another monitor go out on us. ViewSonic finally got back with us. The monitors were sent off and they are back now both working as designed. It just took 3 weeks from the time they were shipped off, till we got them back.
Now we have a couple of NICE spares, since we will be using the old ones.
