Some replies are indented & directly under the message they are referring to, even if the original message is several days old. That means the reply is not in chronological order & difficult to find if you’re looking for the newest messages in a thread.

But some replies are in chronological order & not indented, even if they are referring to an older message.

What controls where the reply appears?

If you use the “Reply” button in the bar at the bottom of a post, to reply to that post, the reply is located immediately under the post it is replying to. This makes it easier to follow a question/answer/comment sequence when the response is not immediate in time. This makes quoting of the post not mandatory b/c the post and the reply are together. That also makes for less “space” taken up on the website.

If you DO NOT use the “Reply” button, the reply is placed in chronological order at the bottom of the thread. If there is no quote, it becomes hard to determine which post the reply belongs to. Thus a redundant quote may be necessary to associate the two. And if the particular conversation continues, there may be multiple quotes in the disjointed exchange.

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

It’s worse when indented replies can’t indent any further in a long thread. (is that reply to the person above or to someone else without quoting) Then there’s out of sequence quoted replies half a page later in long threads by a certain few individuals who make things more difficult to follow. /rant

Install a regex search plug-in in your browser.
      Search for “new$”.
