Was interesting to watch the video on Windows 10 in that the presenter made some comments about why Windows 10, not Windows 9. Best I can remember, he said because this is such a new version, they thought Windows 1 would be appropriate, but that version number had already been used. So they decided to use 1 (for new version) and 0 because it’s the first. Kind of an odd way of doing things, but then that’s sometimes the way Microsoft does things.

With all the excitement around the new “Windows 10” name and hope of being a system for everything, I decided to give it a try. And for a little test I installed an old shell, “Microsoft Bob”, just for fun!!! I had to use a 32-bit version of “W10” as “MS Bob” is a 16-bit program. The install went smoothly, kind of surprising for a 20-yr old shell built for “Windows 95” with instructions in the “Readme” on how to run on “Windows for Workgroups”. Initial running gave a file not found error, resolved by adding “MSBob” to the path (MSBob by default is installed in the root of c). Had to set compatibility to “Windows XP sp3” or earlier to run program.
Amazing are the features in “MS Bob”, taking up less than 25mb (yes mega not giga) on the hard drive. Using it with a 23inch touch screen monitor was revealing. Sure beats the old big yellow trackball that Microsoft created to go with “MS Bob”. By the way, Bob’s executable file is “home.exe”. Bob I think was created for the novice and young users to spark interest in computers and make them useful other than at work. Anyway maybe the “Bob” shell could be resurrected as an “app” for kids to play with on a “Touch” device.

Not a GEEK-a-ZOID, just a very curious USER and have learned much about MY system. If I may add some suggestions here?

#1) Give the Owner/USER the ability to CUSTOMIZE their own system by placing another selectable in the “TASK MANAGER” menu when Ctrl+Delete is pressed.
(A) Provide a method of eliminating all of the Win 8/8.1 in one click in the Customize feature above.
(B) Place the selected item for Explorer at the HIGHEST point of the Window even when double-clicking said item, instead of placing at the bottom as Win7 is doing now.
(C) Do NOT make the Search Feature of Explorer DEFAULT to search the WWW at the same time. Exposing our system to the BAD Guys.
(D) Sir Woody, you may like Libraries and Microsoft likes “HOME” and many another would prefer creating an ICON for the main areas we need to have access when we go to Explorer; examples: Root, C: ; OUR USER Name, C:USERS(OUR NAME) ; Specified H/D, E: , F: , G: , et ceteras .
#2) Be innovative and give us a Window we may use to do other customizing like selectable back ground colors for our preferred programs; contrasting colors for the TEXT of the programs.

I too feel many another would have even more ideas than I have given, there are many more and more and . . you get the idea.

“Yes, I am 64 years old with nothing better to do!!!” That one is still young, @75 in less than two (2) months and still working with these Computers, Desktop and Laptops as well as about 67 years of experience as a Journeyman Electronics Techy, still going strong.

I respect you and your opinions on the Updates as to UPDATE or wait. So far with Win7 Home Premium AND Win 7 Professional there has NOT been an issue, so far, do not want to cause any issues with this record, so far there has not been a BSOD with either of these versions.

Keep the suggestions coming because we never know . . POW . . right in the `ole chops.

Will it be ever possible to get a network working ??? I have Windows 7 on 2 PC’s and although the Home group is correctly parametrized and although I can view the other PC ; it remained impossible to transfer files from one pC to the other : Microsoft changed the stettings for networking constantly but non of the changes gave me any satisfactory working ; The letter never talks about that very important issue ; also of extreme importance is the backup feature in Windows 7 ; instead of being able to DECIDE upon the Disc you want to backup the system feature imposes you a complete backup of two discs ( on my config ) which is absurd and consumes a lot of space ; moreover the backup process does not work fine on a Nas configured partky in Wifi ; there is a lot of important features to address which have never been discussed here ; the fetures I speak about necessitates third^-party software , not to speak from restauration process which stopps functioning that is the restorer points are created but … when applying the process runs and at the end you are told that it failed ! What on that issue ?

I have Win7 Pro SP1 on my desktop and Win7 HomePremium SP1 on a laptop. The HDs that I have given access to my HOME network are visible on each CPU. Neither one can move or copy from themselves to the other computer, but; if I need something from the other, like my laptop, I can copy from my desktop to the laptop or the other way. That way if any PUP or virus that gets on to one cannot spread “it’s self” to the other.

Do you have your network password protected? That is also a good way of protecting your network from spreading any virus or PUP to the other computer. PLUS, am working WireLess . .

This might be a reason not to participate (after all, Woody expressed dislike for the Bing search tracking, and this “feature” seems to go beyond that):

I does work great I use XP for over 10 years till Mar 2014 the to Windows 8.1 tell Oct 3 to windows 10

Perhaps like some people, Woody missed it, because the full language, not just a general statement that doesn’t appear until the install page, is buried in one of those usually unread privacy statements well down the screen. Most betas and public releases these days make any kind of monitoring an explicit opt-in; MS didn’t have the wherewithal. MS’s gaffe seems to have struck home: On Friday, Opera developers published a tell-all about what’s monitored and kept with Opera Sync on their blog.

Perhaps you should read the Privacy Statements for Windows Technical Preview before installing. They are not hiding anything and can’t force you to read. This is NOT a beta release. It is pre-beta software. Features and functionality are in a state of flux. For the first time in a long time Microsoft is actively seeking feedback and testing from a large audience.

Poor Microsoft, can’t win either way, first for consulting no one essentially and jamming 8 down everyone’s gullet, and now for opening it up to anyone who wants to participate in the usage/usability feedback process.
Everyone has the option to opt-out; it’s called not using the product! The user is of no use to Microsoft if they can opt out of providing feedback yet continue to use their preview. There is substantial differentiation between a development period and a bug-checking period.

OK, some things are better, but today in Windows 10 I found my MasterCard number associated to my Microsoft Account without my permission. I think I bought a copy of Windows 7 online (years ago?). This is the kind of activity that can significantly increase risks of ID theft. I finally found a way to delete the card from the account, but I suspect the data is still on Microsoft servers. In my mind my data has been stolen and inappropriately exposed to more risk. Are we now going to have to start reporting card data stolen and cancel accounts frequently? Yes, in most cases the issues are small, but I’d rather not have the headaches. Companies like Comcast that keep your SSN cannot be trusted. It’s just a question of when.
