Will an Old Program That Runs in Win 7 but Not Win 8 Run in Win 10?

I use a 15 year old version of MYOB as my accounting program on Win 7. When Win 8 was launched, I read where it would not run so I stayed with Win 7. I don’t really know if that information was correct at that time. I have been told that it might run in Win 10 even if it did not in Win 8. That sounds unrealistic to me.

Certainly, I could upgrade to a more modern software package to do my current accounting, but what about my history which are stored in separate files for each year? If I’m audited someday, I would need access to the information in those files.

I’m looking for advice.

Hello. For your information, I do my accounting on an old programme too, PF2000 ! It runs faultlessly on all my machines running W-10 10240.

You will not know until you try it. Do as I did, clone your HD first so you would be able to clone it back if it gets mucked up, I doubt it. Lately, I have seen no need to clone my machines as W-10 has been stellar in installation.

You can always try Windows 7 compatibility mode. Right-click on executable, go to compatibility and select Windows 7 from drop-down menu.

Rather than taking someone else’s word, run the Win 8.1 Upgrade Assistant and that will tell you if a program will be compatible or will require updating and if it’s okay in Win 8.1 then it should be okay in Win 10.

Thanks for the link. That page is for Australia and the problem with my version of MYOB is that I’m using the 2001 Canada version 11.

I just ran the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant. It doesn’t check programs – just Windows features and apps. All it says is that my Windows Essentials won’t work but I already knew that.

I don’t think Win 7 mode will work. It was awhile ago but I’m pretty sure I installed MYOB in Win 7 in XP compatibility mode as it wouldn’t run in Win 7.

Anyway, I did an image of my system yesterday and plan to do another before installing Win 10. I may just postpone the install for a bit as I’m running into cap issues with my ISP this month anyway.

I recall MYOB from about ’93 or ’94 with DOS and Win3.1, didn’t care for it as much as Quicken. Downside with Quicken is it grew too much over time, didn’t need all the things it offered.

As far as the auditing goes, the conventional advice for US taxpayers is to keep backups of filings for 3 years personal and 7 years business but that’s only for ‘normal’ filings, anything unusual may require retaining them longer. Most accountants advise to keep paper copies.

An issue with old programs is whether new versions can import the older data files, case in point is Q&A invoicing program, client had to upgrade from 2.2 to 4.0 so as to be imported into a different program, he had version 2.0 and was down to manually putting the customers’ data into Quickbooks. It’s just one of those things that a software publisher uses to keep their customer database.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

When you run the Win 8.1 Upgrade Assistant and it has completed its scan, click on the blue See compatibility details link and that gives a list of what to review and what is compatible, although may not list all programs.
