Block browsing the Internet: When XP support ended, we used a proxy trick to keep older systems somewhat safe. You can do the same on your Win7 PC: launch Internet Explorer and open Tools/Internet options/Connections. Click the LAN settings button; in the next window, check “Use a proxy server for this connection.” Type 127.0.0.1 into the Address field and confirm the port is set to 80. Click OK and close the Internet Options screens.

These changes will prevent Internet Explorer from connecting to the Internet — even if the machine is part of a network or in a peer-to-peer setting.

since this proxy trick also prevents windows update from working because windows update depends on internet explorer (which is not needed anymore since i applied last office 2010 patches ever yesterday), will this also block microsoft security essentials from updating? currently i don’t dare to try it…

Is there an obstacle that prevents reversing the changes if MSE fails to update?
