Just getting ready to start setting up my new Win 10 Pro laptop and have a question about passwords. I am planning to set up a local account/admin account and wondered if I need to enter a password or passwords. My Win 7 laptop didn’t need one, but what about Win 10? I would prefer not to have to enter one, or to at least make it so that I don’t need to enter it each time I restart or log on.

I have a lot of other info gathered from AW on other things to do when initially setting it up before going online as well. Great info here for sure!

Thanks for any info on passwords or other things I might want to watch out for. I’ve had this in the box since it was delivered on Thursday, and have not yet even turned it on – still a bit apprehensive to be sure I’m ready to get it all set up right! ๐Ÿ™‚

You do not have to set up a password in Win10, but it is more secure if you do. Particularly if you are using an ID with Administrator privileges.

Thanks PK. Yes – that is the drawback. Can a password be added later – or is there a setting that I can change so that it doesn’t ask for it each time?

ETA to add – not sure of the Win 10 version yet, but can I still use just local accounts and do away with the MS account?

Do first setup offline to create Local acct. In the Settings app under Accounts-Sign in options there is “change account password” so you can set it whenever you like. Also you may want to uncheck the boxes at the bottom of that screen under “Privacy”

Great – thanks! I may go ahead with out a password and then add one later if I need to. And I plan on just an local/admin account at first till I get it all set and then add another user.

        There’s just one thing –

If you do the initial setup without a password and then set a password later, depending on how you do the latter you may never get the “security questions to reset your password” feature.

As to whether that is good or bad, well…

Setup the PC with passwords. Then see How To Automatically Login In Windows 10.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did go ahead and set up a password with the security questions and will look into how to log in without it. I thought that I might need it for some admin functions down the road, so it is there.

      Thanks again!
