Win 10 slow boot and even slower reboot

I upgraded my Win 7 Toshiba laptop with an I-3 processor and 4 MHz of Ram. In booting up my laptop in Win 10 it is about 15 seconds slower to boot up….HOWEVER, Win 10 REBOOT is 3 1/3 minutes and in Win 7 it is only about 2 minutes to reboot…….in addition, in turning off the computer it now shows a black screen towards the end of the power down process, but there are still lights on where the power light is and the other lights for about a minute or more before the laptop is completely turned off…….

I would really like to use Windows 10, but with these slow boot issues and the powering off issues, it’s a no go…….In addition when I rolled back to Win 7, my anti-virus software said it was out of date and I had to repurchase new anti-virus software :-(….any suggestions are greatly appreciated…..many thanks, John

Hi What media did you use to up grade to W10?? Most members here recommend using the Media creation tool (MCT) You will get more suggestions from members.

The upgrade window appeared to upgrade to Win 10 on my laptop and I just clicked on it and followed the prompts….John

Hi John! I would create a back up image and then give the Media Creation Tool a shot in my #2 post!. It may take over 2 hours to complete. You could also do a repair install. Maybe other members will reply to your thread!! Did you roll back to W7??

PS W10 offers Windows Defender for AV. That’s what I use, but you can choose which AV you want to use!!

The upgrade method should not make a difference in boot or shutdown times.

Take a look at your startup items using Autoruns for Windows or WhatInStartup. If you use Autoruns pay attention to the Logon tab.

For a re-boot there can be several factors. What do you have running now that you didn’t on Win7? It could be waiting for devices to respond. Did you tweak Win7 shutdown response times?

And, if the OP gave Micro$oft his email address not knowing what that entails (and who does?) you get all the telemetry traffic with MS. I have seen machines still on slow DSL connections getting really bogged down.

The two remedies were:

Either a (much) faster cable connection
or
switching to a local account and turning telemetry off.

But either way I recommend SD Anti Beacon. Free and so far no problems at all.

Windows 8 introduced a “hybrid shutdown” which is used by default when powering down. Since you are upgrading from Windows 7 to 10, you are gaining access to this function. As a result your boot cycle times should normally be faster and not slower.

This suggests that something else is going on, over and above the mere fact of an OS upgrade. I’d suggest OS updates and patches but these routinely display a status screen that really can’t be missed.

One thing you can try is to Hibernate your system rather than a full shutdown. Hibernation sets the power consumption to zero and has no special concerns when moving your laptop. It’s a workaround rather than a true answer but even workarounds have their place.

Back in the day there used to be certain issues with some networking chipsets and the way Windows shut them down. Windows expected a positive response from each and every driver and would stall on a system shutdown for a minute or more if a driver didn’t respond properly. However this triggered a design change in Windows so that the OS no longer required positive driver responses. I can’t imagine this old problem is back now, could it?
