WIN 10 Upgrade: Yellow Graphics Display in Device manager

Greetings All –

I just updated my Dell Vostro 3300 Laptop to Win 10 Pro from Win 7 Pro. The upgrade seemed to go just fine except for a quirk in Device Manager. There are now two display adapters listed in Device Manager. Intel HD Graphics and Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. The Intel entry appears normal, but the MS Basic entry has the yellow exclamation point with the following message. The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required by the device (Code 31). The driver trying to start is not the same as the driver for the POSTed display adapter.

Attempting to update both drivers, the automated response was that both were the most current. The processor is an i5 M 520 @ 2.40 GHz. During SETUP. the adapter is identified as a Geforce GT310M. I tried uninstalling the Basic adapter to see if things would be newly recognized upon reboot, but no such luck. The Dell support page is silent on graphics drivers. I don’t think I have any video performance issues, at least not yet. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks much.

If this was my computer then I would right click on the MS one and select Disable as it is unable to load, but as I don’t have Win 10 and this isn’t my computer and don’t want to risk giving you bad advice – then I won’t

Do you have both on board Video and an external Video card? If so, go into the motherboard BIOS and disable on board video..

It spelled out choices – Of those, if it isn’t causing any problems then just leave it as it is.

You need to specify your exact laptop to the Dell support site. You should then get access to graphics drivers. I do not recall what the Dell nomenclature is, but it should be on the bottom of your laptop.

I put in the code from the back of the laptop into the DELL website, so the results should be specific to my computer. There wasn’t much there. Nothing I could see that resembled graphics anyway. I think I’ll give the Intel site a try. I don’t understand why device manager lists two adapters, however. My desktop system has onboard video as well, and it only shows the one adapter. I also don’t remember there being a problem when it was running windows 7, although I just picked the machine up and wasn’t running 7 for very long. I thought that everything was clean and current before I upgraded though.

Laptops have a graphics chip, usually Intel, AMD or Nvidia as well as the low res on board VGA, but you would only normally see either of the first three in Device Manager – but with Win 10, MS seem to be sticking all sorts of their own in and Nvidia being a point in case where they were downloading their own drivers and “kicking” the vendor’s drivers out until some sort of agreement was reached.

You could always contact MS to see what it’s supposed to do.

So it looks like the choices are:
Go back to Win 7,
Do nothing and just live with it,
Wait to see if MS comes out with a new driver for an older system, or
Disable the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter to get rid of the yellow exclamation point.
Logic tells me that disabling something that’s not working anyway would be harmless. On the other hand, doing something that turns out the lights might make a later repair problematic. I guess it all goes back to my basic lack of understanding of what the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter does. The Intel HD Graphics adapter works just fine, so I’m not seeing how my system is compromised right now.

Thanks to everybody. I appreciate the input. I think I’ll just live with it the way it is. Since it appears to be a MS issue, perhaps a WIN 10 update will eventually make the problem go away. If the system quits performing, I can always restore the last good WIN 7 image.
