My good friend the network admin, just loaded WIN 2000 on my Compaq 4550, 4g HD (yeah it’s old!!), pentium 2, 266mhz 64 ram.
The installation went fine – (so it seemed).
When it re-booted and was ready to start up, it got all the way to the Opening screen, where the progress bar on the bottom is supposed to fill in (where it says Windows is starting (or something to that effect) and then does absolutely nothing. It just hangs.
We tried reinstalling – still no good. It generated a report about compatibility issues, and it mentioned that my ‘display driver’ needed to be updated to be compatible with Win 2000 (I originally had 95 on this machine).

I know you probably need a hell of a lot more information, but does this sound familiar to anyone? Can anyone guess how I can get Windows 2000 to start on my machine?

Thanks for reading the post !!
    Michael

When you start the PC, press the F8 key and select VGA mode. If Windows completes the boot process, you can be reasonably assured that it’s your video adapter.

Tried F8 VGA mode (and a couple of the other modes !) – got as far as Main Screen. Still does not open.
So – is the only fix buying a video card that is Win 2000 compatible?

Thanks very much for your reply.

Most likely, yes, but obviously I don’t want to tell you to go drop your hard earned money on what *I* think would fix the problem. Have you checked to see if the one you have is on the Hardware Compaitibility List? Remember, 2000 is based on NT, as is XP, and they’re notoriously more choosy about what kind of hardware they will allow you to run. (That’s the price you pay for stability.)
