Something came over me on the 7th Apr and I installed 1809 on my Desktop PC (W10 Pro)

Some days later I have almost given up trying to clean up the dogs breakfast it’s made of my folders etc. I’m currently backing up my desktop to an external drive before I try to reverse this update. No doubt that will be a mess too.

What did it do?  Well it seems it didn’t like me putting everything into C:\users\*me*\documents\ to make backups dead simple, so it moved (copied) mp3s, jpgs, videos etc to folders outside.  It also moved all the stuff in Documents & settings. The original folders it marked with security ‘deny to everyone’ and hid them.

Sadly, as I didn’t need some of the data immediately after the update, I didn’t realise that’s what happened – so had been using said desktop for 3 days until Thursday I tried to find a video  via VLS they all appeared to have gone.  The old folders now appear with a curly arrow as if they are short cuts – I’ve changed to security so I have access now. But they are not short cuts. System files. There’s loads of them, not just media.

It’s only because as an old DOSser I knew the Tree command to find them. God help the millenials.

On the 11th I had two copies of all these gigabytes of data.  Now some have disappeared (frightening!)

On my laptop I have it nudging me to shut down and install (W10 home here).

I expect it’s cheaper for me time wise to source a linux box and move my stuff over.

This is appalling, I keep thinking they’ve upset a staffer who’s deliberately written this code, I mean moving a users data! with all the programs looking for it. Bizarre.

You can restore the original Documents folder from the Windows.old folder.

Thanks, the data was available, just in the wrong place.

My backup having finished, I did a restore.  So far so good, the only spurious ‘system’ folder is now ‘My Pictures’, which fortunately doesn’t have my important imagery as I kept that elsewhere.  Of course it’s asking me to download the update yet again.

Strangely enough my W10 Home laptop (this one) is not updating beyond W10 1803. I thought I’d try to update it to check the before and after, as it’s less populated – but it didn’t happen.

Shopping around now for Linux based kit (it’s rarer than before – why?)  Having been Windows since 3.1 this is the limit for me.  MS – touch my files and data at your peril!

I omitted to mention above that my music files had been copied to OneDrive without my permission – one synch would have put the lot up there (and what else?)

For those who have updated I suggest you switch on system and hidden files in your File manager view – then you’ll see what’s been going on.  It’s a little more than sinister imho.
