On reading this most recent comment on Windows 10, I fear for my sanity.
I have great problems with ’tiles’ and the scrolling involved to ‘find’ the one I want, and to change even that for other layouts and functionality seems like change for the sake of it.
I don’t like finger-work on screen anyway – much less convenient than mouse and keyboard.
As mentioned in the article, much of this seems to be motivated by marketing, although the marketeers have got it wrong – don’t change for the sake of it – just make the existing more stable.

I use .hta scripts a lot for automating moderately complex tasks specific to my needs/desires, and I am probably not the only such. .hta scripts run under Internet Explorer in Windows 7. Since IE is being superseded, I would be grateful if you would please track the support of .hta in Windows 10. My scripts mostly use ActiveX, so the lack of its support by Edge seems ominous, but will/does .hta have some other support in Windows 10? I understand that you don’t respond to specific questions, but please consider covering .hta support in Windows 10 in further issues of your excellent column.

In your column “Win10 build 10122: Two steps forward, one back” you said that “now that Microsoft doesn’t burn DVDs and stick them into boxes”. What about people that use dialup, it would take them about a week to download Win 10 at over 3gbs. Or how about people who want a DVD in hand or people who deal only in cash transactions? Will we be able to download an iso file to get the DVD?
These are just a few questions that come to mind and there are more that deal with slow internet connections and how to restore a crashed PC.

I too like how Win X is shaping up in build 10122. I agree that the start menu is getting better, but is not there yet. Today, however, I got really frustrated with the OS and so I did what I do every now and again: I gave the OS a haircut. Actually it was more like a castration. I deleted the folder WindowsSystemApps! I had to do this from Windows 8 on the same computer, because the folder was completely locked when Win X was running. Then I disabled the two windows store services, WSService and AppXSvc. I had to do this using the registry. Services.msc won’t allow these two services to be disabled.
After the reboot, Win X was suprisingly ‘quiet,’ but still worked. Well, almost. I also deleted Cortana and Spartan (I did say that I was angry). But now the start button was completely dead! As was the Cortana widget in the taskbar, which I removed in the properties dialog for the taskbar. The new notification widget was also dead, which I also removed by turning it off in the notifications “immersive” control panel program for notifications.
So I installed the latest Start8 menu ($4.99) from stardock software (with whom I have no affiliation), and it works perfectly in Win X! Windows 7 Start Menu in Win X. It is vastly superior to the native WinX start menu. Unless you’re in love with the tiles. I’m not!

I know I went a bit too far, but I just wanted to see how WinX would react to these extreme measures. It doesn’t seem to matter at all. I put the immersive Settings app in the Start8 start menu and it works fine. So I can still receive windows updates. AND now I have a find box in start 8 that searches the computer, only!

Ha, for me that describes the net results of Microsoft’s last six years of grinding as it pertains to a desktop OS perfectly. Even there I prefer a menu though amongst other “old world” methods, socializing my work OS is just not for me; weather gadget is all I need.

Many (including myself) get Fatal Error when trying to SysPrep a configured Windows 10 machine. The blogs report the error related to the install of numerous Apps that come along as the OS is installed. Further – the only workarounds involve Powershell commands to discover and then remove the offending Apps for each user – a pain. Can’t Microsoft provide a SysPrep tool that works?

I have tried installing build 10074 in a Virtual Machine using Oracle Virtual Box. (My former installation of the Technical Preview will not load – it says it needs to be repaired, but does not indicate how to do that.)
Hoaever, I get to a point where it says “Your PC needs to be restarted” – but then I can find no way to restart it (I presume it means the virtual machine needs restarting), as when I click inside the window and capture the mouse, no mous pinter appears, and I can’t find how to get to the Start/Restart button…
What can I do?
