I did a computer scan this morning using ESET NOD32. I received a messages as an infection in my “D” drive which is the system restore drive saying that there was as an infection of of a variant of Win32 toolbar. Is this a true infection and can I delete from my system without harming the files in the restore drive.
Thanks for any help

AskWoody LoungerMay 4, 2009 at 12:05 pm #1159144I’m a bit confused. Are you saying tha you have your backups stored on the D drive ??? Is the infection being found inside a backup ???
Or are you talking about the Restore points for the System Restore utility ???
Not talking about the system restore utitlity that parts of system applications. My computer has a c drive and a d drive. The d drive is the HP recovery drive so if the c drive crashes and an go back and start again. I guess it is a system restore drive. My backups are on on remote cd roms. the message is coming from the d drive…

I’m not familiar with HP’s configurations, but if it really is a protected recovery drive, it should not be possible for it to have become infected, nor do I think you would have routine access to it like any other drive.
To see whether a particular file is infected, you could try getting a second opinion from an online scanner like http://www.virustotal.com/ (as long as the file does not contain confidential information).

Thanks for any helpSince the supposed infection occurs on the System Recovery partition it is more likely that ESET published a new set of virus signatures that accidentally correspond to something on the recovery partition. You normally do not have easy access to the Recovery partition so it is unlikely that it has become infected.
