I have been using VGA and I am trying to use HDMI on my windows 10 desktop. When it is booting into windows 10 I see the windows icon and the circle of dots. After a few seconds I see a window open in the bottom right 1/4 of the screen that is basically a square of a off green color, then my system will reboot. I can boot into bios and HDMI works. I can boot into safe mode and HDMI works. I went to the manufacture and downloaded the latest video drivers from Intel 3/9/202 26.20.100.7985. I have a ASRock J3455-ITX motherboard with a Intel(R) HD Graphics 500 video. I have a LG E2350 [Monitor] and downloaded drivers from manufacture 11/4/2009 1.0.0.0. Once i boot using VGA I can hot swap from VGA to HDMI and it will continue to work. How do I get past the error when it tries to boot with HDMI cable plugged in?

Do you have a Windows boot DVD/USB? (If not create one.)
Does HDMI work if you boot from it?

      Alternatively, make a backup.
      Run Windows with VGA.
Open Device Manager (Win R, devmgmt.msc).
      Delete all Display adapters.
      Shutdown.
      Connect the HDMI.
Power on and Windows will re-install the video driver.

      cheers, Paul

How long does it normally take to boot up, with VGA only?

Does the monitor have a configurable ‘preferred interface’, which can be set to HDMI?

In Control Panel > Display > Screen Resolution, is the resolution set to the monitor’s ‘preferred’ value? (This is on Win 7; Win 10 may have a different path?)

Is there a ‘F’ key that one uses when there are multiple monitors connected? (This may be more likely on a laptop.) Does the computer think that the HDMI connection is a second monitor? Which is ‘number 1’, VGA or HDMI?

This may not be acceptable operationally, but may be interesting as a diagnostic:
With only the HDMI cable connected, have the monitor off during boot. Then turn monitor on. Does the computer initiate a re-boot, either before or after the monitor is turned on?
