I have an HP system 1.6Mhz with WinXP and office 2k. I have been trying to get Symantec Norton systems Works to defrag my 60GB drive. It tells me that Windows has it tied up. I did get the Windows defragger to run and now there is a band above all the windows about 1 inch wide. I can

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 18, 2003 at 6:01 pm #654530Thanks for the response. To my knowledge, I did not do anything but try to defrag my disk. I have been trying to run Symantec defrag that comes with System Works. It keeps crapping out with the message that Windows owns some process and will not let go. I did say that it should try to repair what ever was keeping it from running. Repair is an option in System Works. I don’t know what it does.
Most but not all windows come out too short, and seemingly run below the screen. I adjusted the monitor to move them up, and now some pop up windows and new windows, (I can’t tell the pattern yet for sure,) will come up too high and I can’t see the top of the window.
I admit I don’t know what I am talking about, but it seems that there is some data point that the windows open to and it has been shifted, and/or the several tries at defraging by the Windows defragger have screwed it up. Nothing else seems to be changed.
Thanks for any help.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 18, 2003 at 7:47 pm #654558As far as I’m aware both Norton defrag’ and Disk Dr. run outside WXp. In other words you get them to run and they programme message comes up like… “do you want to schedule this event when you next re-start?” I always say yes to this. When I re-boot the Disk Doctor runs on either or both, depending upon my previous selection – when I was in WXp, disks. I have already set the programme to auto fix errors. I would try this out – but leave the defrag ’till another time; see if the Win Doctor or Disk Doctor sorts the problem.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 18, 2003 at 11:36 pm #654620Hi Cowboy,
thanks for the reply. I did a restore to last week when I did not have the problem. Still there. I went into the monitor setup and sized it to 2/3 or so. The band is still there. The system can write to the locations but most, but not all windows are too short. I assume that it is a windows sizing/configuration issue, ie either they come in actual dementions or number of pixels. The count for the pixels may be off. I did notice that the Lounge main menu window went off the page on the bottom?I don’t have a problem do ing the restore even further back but I am going to try to resize to 640 x ? and see what happens then put it back to 1024.
I woudl love a comment.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 19, 2003 at 11:07 am #654734Thanks for the suggestion. However I don’t have either. Some points, I down loaded a current copy of the NVDIA driver and installed it. No help. I started the ZINO reader window and it came up the correct size. It is getting it’s window sizing criteria from somewhere different from the others. I have ACT on my system and it has the same problem so it is not just Office applications that are affected. If I open Start – Programs it does the full page, no band, so it seemes that the issue is not the ability of the monitor/video system to use the screen..
Thanks again.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 19, 2003 at 7:17 pm #654865Michael,
Have you checked your display settings?
Right click on the desktop. Click on propertiessettings.
Check to see that your monitor is being recognized properly and that your display card is the proper one.
Also click on advanced and look at your details for the display and monitor.
If necessary, reset your display resolution and color quality.
There is also a troubleshooter tab there, you might want to run.Bob

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 20, 2003 at 4:04 pm #655086Thanks for the great input. However, it has not helped. A recap of events and what I have done to date, which includes the suggestions that I have received:
I have been trying to get Symantec defrag to work, tried it a few times, it always @#$!% out at about 30% to 50% and nothing is happening. I have done the Microsoft included defrag a number of times too.I installed the then current XP update before this started.
I did the repair and schedule a repair stuff and get a message in the check disk section that Windows owns some file so it cannot check partitions
I have done a restore, changed the settings to 800×640 and back 1200 x? and back. I have upgraded the video card driver.
On the screen controlled by the monitor buttons, I have shrunk the screen size slightly to be sure I can see black around the edges. Occasionally a get a full screen window, but usually I still have the +/- 1
