A couple of months ago I had a problem leaving 25,000 unidentified fragments on C:. Cleaned it all up and re-installed Windows 98. This left me running from a subdirectory called WINDOWS.000. The plain WINDOWS files are still there.

Surely I don’t need both of these. How do I get rid of one, preferably WINDOWS.000? And why did that happen?

When you re-installed Windows, you asked it to do so into another directory, rather than over the old one. By now you should be able to remove the original, but do not rename the new one. That’s where your system is now housed and you’ll make it unusable if you alter it’s present name. My Windows 98SE on a triple-boot system is in a directory called Windows 001.
If you really have to have the directory named plain ‘Windows’ you’ll need to do yet another installation, this time specifying ‘Windows’ as the directory. I don’t think renaming it, then running something like Norton Utilities would be entirely successful.
If you want to know if your old Windows is still workable, try this. Find a file ‘MSDOS.SYS’. Cancel the read only etc. attributes. Make a copy of it, and name it something safe. Edit the first one and make the pointers point to your old, rather than your new Windows files. Note that if this causes everything to go pear-shaped, you will have to reinstate the original MSDOS.SYS from DoS. If, however, it works ok, wait a couple of weeks before deleting the unwanted folder.

If you’ve installed the second windows folder (.000) by using the CAB files from C:WINDOWSOPTIONSCABS, you’ll want to keep that portion of the Windows folder so that you don’t have to find your CD everytime you’re asked for the CD files.
