If you’re trying to add a new account for home use, see Option 1 at:

How to Add a Local Account or Microsoft Account in Windows 10

(You have to click unobvious choices at steps 3 and 4, and there’s an extra link at step 10 if you want the new account to be an administrator like your current account.)

      Hi b,

Thank you for your reply. What I would like to do is simply access Windows options the usual way–that is, click on the first screen that opens when you turn on the machine, which then leads toย  to various menus. I would like to not have to log into Microsoft in order to do this. Currently it would appear to be unavoidable; I am prevented from getting to any other screen before I set up an account and give more personal information than I would like.

You can still do this.ย  Unless they wiped the computer and rebuilt it, it should be just as you left it. What is the first screen you get – can you describe what you see?ย  Are you being asked set up questions?

Make sure that you have your internet / network ethernet cable “disconnected”.

I find when you install W10 for the first time, if the ethernet cable is connected W10 can force you to use a microsoft account. If you plug it out W10 normally allows you to log into a local account as no network is detected ….

For those of you who are interested in the resolution of the problem, the answer is, “I am not sure”. It is very likely that IT was using an ethernet cable when they worked on the computer, as was suggested by R-Type. I mentioned it to them when I tried the 4th time to get the internet disconnection problem fixed. When I went to check in, the Microsoft account creation problem was resolved. But not the internet connection problem. BTW our (2) IT people are great. They love solving problems and both have a great sense of humor!
