Microsoft to change the emphasis on releases from frequency to quality…

Hmm, where have I seen that suggestion before, I wonder? It wouldn’t possibly be on this site, would it?

Unless they go back to using QA Engineers to test builds on real hardware, not in virtual machines, I see this as a renaming only, other claims aside. PR.

As I wrote elsewhere recently about the same: Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

We are transitioning and converting our current ring model, based on the frequency of builds, to a new channel model that pivots on the quality of builds and better supports parallel coding efforts.

What does the above statement mean?

        1 major / 1 minor per year
        that’s a good approch for quality 😀

The purpose of the various rings and their use had become jumbled and unpredictable over the last years. Skip ahead was introduced. The Slow ring was barely used for several years. The Release ahead ring was used intermittently and unpredictably. All the rings were intended to get some version of Windows 10 but not the same version out as quickly as possible.

Changing from rings to channels whose terminology and meaning aligns with other Microsoft products should lessen confusion for users of all stripes (normal. enthusiast, IT pro, etc). Making releases and content dependent on some quality level is a step in the correct direction if speed and artificial deadlines are removed from the release decision process.

Everyone is welcome to say this is just marketing speak. The proof will be in the quality of the releases. Remember, you can just release quality solely on what you see in online forums. Forums are generally used by those with problems not the vast majority who do not have issues.
