I run W7 SP1 and have no experience with W10.

I will be helping my son-in-law this afternoon with his new, W10 laptop.

I want to set up a separate Data partition for him on this machine, and move all his User Folders to that partition.

Is the procedure for doing this on W10 the same as for W7?

    Thanks for your help,
    Dick

I do not recommend moving the Users section from OS C to data D; too many troubles if an OS restore or even a data restore is necessary. I have made “parallel” directories on D and “told” each program that writes — to write to a D folder and not to C folder. Now, the material ending in Users[acct name]AppData — that material I recommend leaving on C with the OS.

Why would you want multiple partitions these days? Put an SSD in, get an external caddy for the old disk and use it for backups.

As I mentioned, this is my son-in-law’s computer.

I am working with it as is (as he bought it.)

      My question is:
Is the procedure the same for moving user data to a 2nd partition the same as it is for Windows 7?

Should be. Just change the location using File Explorer properties “Location” tab for the folders you wish to move.

Sorry for my indirect answer 🙂 I was only thinking of OS and data preservation, and if ever needed: EZ data restoration.

      Joe,
Sort of agree with Roland on this one; if you ever want to do a “non-destructive reinstall” of Windows 7, the libraries have to be in their default locations. Don’t know if that’s true with Windows 10, but I see no harm in moving the default download locations to folders on the D: drive.

With Libraries I’d recommend leaving them alone and just relocating the folder which belong in the various Libraries. Libraries are not constructs which were meant to be moved. They are just a convenient way of grouping folders.

This can be marked “solved.” For the record, I moved all the user folders I wanted to on my son-in-law’s Windows 10 laptop using the same procedure that I use on my Windows 7 laptop.
