Windows 10 Restart and Keyboard problems.

I have a Vaio VPCM121AX with an SSD that was “upgraded” from 7 home premium to 10, and worked OK for a while. Then it would hang on the logging off screen when restarting. The only way to get it to restart was to manually switch it off. On rebooting it offered various options to troubleshoot the problem, none of which worked, including “refresh” windows. The keyboard also got flakey, with some keys giving the wrong characters. The on-screen keyboard works, as well as an external keyboard.Uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard did not fix the problem. I’ve reverted it to Win7 from an image, but it keeps nagging about running the “upgrade” to 10. I’m probably going to try that just to see if it works better next time. Meanwhile, I’m curious if anyone else has had similar problems, and what the “cure” is?

I just restored it from an image I created shortly after the GWX “upgrade”, I’ve set my wireless to “metered” and unplugged the ethernet cable, and told it to ask for a reboot, so hopefully I’ll be able to figure out which update(s) hosed the machine.

I did try the clean boot, but it didn’t help.
So far it’s working OK from the image I restored. If it gives me trouble in the future I will probably try wiping the drive and do a clean install.

If I understand it correctly, Windows 10 updates for Oct maybe Nov are designed to fix a lot of issues that have been happening so you might want to wait a while before upgrading back to Windows 10.

Also since you were able to run Windows 10 for a while I think you could consider a fresh install instead of relying on the GWX method. Others will know more about that than me.

I wanted to give Win10 a try before installing on my primary machine and did the upgrade on an older computer which was originally a Vista machine upgraded to Win7. The upgrade went without a hitch and Win10 was working great the first day. The second day Win10 did an upgrade and when it finished and rebooted both the keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. Several more hard reboots and power disconnects did nothing to change this and I finally gave up for the day.

On day 3, I powered up to the dreaded BSOD, no beeps from the bios and nothing but the sound of the fans spinning. Doing a google search, I discovered that many others have gone through this same problem and like me are now the proud owners of another door stop. Thankfully this was not a computer I use daily and I will not be updating my primary machine until MS forces it on me!
