windows 10 updates – more time spent on updates than on using machines

i maintain 8 machines (mine, and my sister’s)
ever since anniversary edition, these updates have done nothing but cost us time. one machine is still spinning after two hours (that one never was able to do the anniversary edition, either) – all machines are 4 or LESS years old
takes forever to download the updates (i have fast internet), tons of time on reboot, etc

MICROSOFT, yuou have screwed up windows 10; it worked well, PRIOR to the anniversary updates.
I have gone from an ecstatic user to a very frustrated computer maintainer.

is there a way to pass comments onto microsoft directly?

One of your windows secrets leaders, last year, was able to pass on a group message to microsoft, and get people to subscribe to the thread.
can that be done with these update issues?

This time around I’ve had one machine that took ages to download/install and another that didn’t have any problems at all, although the restart and configuring seems to take much longer than in Win 7 – or is that my imagination.

The restart is optional if it’s between 8.00am and 5.00pm and I’ve found I’ve been able to continue what I was doing during their download/install.

For some reason or other, on one machine I have to click on an Install button for them to install rather than that being auto.

For the one that has never been able to update to the AU, have you tried a manual update by using a Win 10 boot disk.

If you haven’t created Win 10 install media then Google for how do I create a win 10 iso and use the Microsoft link for your locale then click on the Download tool now button.

The ISO will take the machine up to 1607 14393.0 if you opt not to check for updates which can speed up the process.

It can be your antivirus program that’s causing the problem or in the case of an Intel machine, a driver may need updating.

For me it was the Intel(R) Management Engine Interface which can be found in Device Manager/System Devices and right clicking on it and selecting Update Driver Software and Search online… found an updated driver and then it completed successfully, although I still had to power shutdown on the second reboot and then reboot, but it was able to recover the installation.

two machines are virtually identical (in the above mess), anbd ONE of them updated to the AU, and the other did not.
I tried building recovery USB, INSTALL usb, we did it from the usb stick, it hung up, reverted back to NON-AU, etc, etc, etc
Our next step (we have image backups) is to try and blow away the drive and start with full clean windows 10 install, but it is PAIN IN THE LOWER REGION, I should not have to fool with these like this.
it wAS clean for the first year of windows 10. And other posts in the forums relate to the same issues.
I just did my brand new HP Spectre x360, took TWO HOURS to do this past set of updates.

One of my Win 10 laptops was stuck on 95% install so I left it on overnight and this morning when I checked it, it was still showing as 95% but then quickly gave me the prompt to restart.

When yours reverted back to the previous version, did you get an error code ?

I too have been frustrated since the AV update. My email and calendar apps have been working perfectly since the beginning of 10 and since the update they have gone to not working at all to partially working to almost working and then it starts the cycle all over again. I have tried everything I can think of and everything I’ve read on the web and 3 hours with tech support to no avail. They tell me it’s a bad install which I reinstalled and didn’t make a difference. This wouldn’t be so bad as I normally would still have my phone to get the emails and if all else failed the webmail for outlook.live EXCEPT MY WINDOWS PHONE STARTED DOING THE EXACT SAME THING WITH THE EXACT SAME ERROR AT THE SAME TIME AND NOW THE WEB SITE SOMETIMES DOES THE SAME THING. I’ve been using a pc since msdos 1.25 and have used extensively every operating system since then and have never had too many problems and none that weren’t correctable pretty quickly. They have taken me from a pretty loyal supporter to a frustrated user in a little over a month. I was an insider and I didn’t have hardly any problems then. Oh by the way I’m running a Surface Pro4 (a very expensive POS) with nothing on it but Office 2003 and a few games. Everything else I run in a Hy-per V window.

that’s the problem. these updates get rolled out, and if there is an issue (despite fllawless operations before) , WE have to spend hours to diagnose it and teh ghe machine running again. I don’t hve TIME to continualy diagnose this machine. I DO NOT ADD any new stuff to it (same stuff over the past year is on it), CLEAN machine, kids don’t use it, etc, etc, etc.

Exactly!!! I had the BSODs pretty much gone until yesterday. Since then 4. Guess what happened yesterday. Right now it just decided the internet wasn’t connected so I checked with my other machine and it works but the windows phone and Surface say no. A reboot fixes the phone and the Surface reboot says it’s preparing updates. Hmm those were done and complete yesterday. It was locked up on that screen. Finally I shut it off and restart and it boots like nothing has happened and all is well again. I have only one weak link and that is I’m running the Surface dock and a monitor with an active display port to DVI-D connector. Cable will be here in couple of days to rule that out as a problem.
