I have two identical laptops running Windows 7 Pro. A while ago, a “Get Windows 10” icon appeared in the system tray. It reports that my computers are compatible and has a “Reserve your free upgrade” button, which I have ignored as I am fine with Windows 7 and in no rush to change to Windows 10, although I may get it later, if/when it appears to be worthwhile and stable.

However, I was surprised to notice in the update history on one of my computers that an “Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro” failed on three consecutive days last week (error details: code 80240020). I gather this means that something has been deferred for some reason? …

… but now I am unsure whether my computers are going to be “upgraded” to Windows 10 automatically or not. Is there a way to make sure Windows 7 is not replaced with Windows 10 unless/until I choose?

Remember, while there is no hurry there is a time limit. The FREE upgrade is available until July 26, 2016.

      Thanks for your replies.

Re GWX Control Panel, this seems to provide a way to hide or disable the Get Windows 10 icon, but given that I have not requested Windows 10 on either of my computers, why has Windows update apparently attempted to install it automatically anyway, and will GWX Control Panel prevent further such attempts?

Re the time limit on the free Windows 10 upgrade, given that I am fine with Windows 7, what are the strongest reasons, if any, to consider changing to Windows 10?

I can’t think of any “strongest” reasons. I have been following the Win10 Technical Preview program since October 2014, have also upgraded Win7 to Win10 on one of my laptops, but really don’t see any real advantage w/ Win10 (and certain things that are not-so-friendly as in Win7).

If you are getting along well with Win7 then stay with it.

Anybody have Windows 10 ?? I don’t want it but that windows 10 icon somehow got back on my taskbar, and when I clicked it I immediately got “Install Window 10 upgrade lets get started” in my update window. I had just installed updates so maybe that’s how the icon got on my taskbar. I do NOT want to install Window 10… anybody know how to get that off of my Windows update screen ?

          Anybody have Windows 10 ??

I have it on 2 Desktops, 4 Notebooks and a Tablet, no problems. It’s more or less a blend between Win7’s Start menu and Win8/8.1 Tiles, get a menu when clicking the Start button plus some tiles that can be changed/added to for those features most accessed by the user/s. Haven’t found any programs that worked on Win8.1 that don’t work on Win10, even most that worked on Win7 are fine.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

Thanks for your reply, Coochin. I was still wondering why my computers (both I now see) apparently attempted (and failed with error 80240020) several times (last week but not since then) to install Windows 10 automatically even though I haven’t requested it, and I came across a related post you made in another thread.
      http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread//171357-How-can-I-effectively-prevent-WIN-from-upgrading-to-10?p=1021334&viewfull=1#post1021334

In that thread, you suggested that the cause of automatic Windows 10 update attempts was the “Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” setting; however, the above failed update attempts on my computers were all listed as “Important” (not “Recommended”), so that setting might not explain this fully?

Anyway, if I understand correctly, the .reg files provided in “Method 3” on the following page will safely allow me to disable now, and re-enable later, both the Windows 10 notification icon and automatic Windows 10 updating – is that correct?

        Yes, that is correct.

As far as I can tell from testing the .reg files on one of my systems, and on four customers’ systems, they work fine.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve since discovered that Windows Update already downloaded 6 GB (!) of installation files onto both my computers a couple of weeks ago, automatically, even though I didn’t ask for them …

… and I have now switched off automatic updating in Windows Update, used Disk Cleanup to remove the downloaded installation files, and used the latest version of GWX Control Panel to disable further Windows 10 notifications and updates.

The actual download is about 3.3GB. The downloaded files then get decompressed into the hidden $Windows.~BT folder, where they expand to the 6GB+ you’ll see there.

Yes, GWX Control Panel now (v1.3.0.0 released 12 September 2015) can disable both the GWX nags and the repeating attempts to auto-upgrade to Win10.

Have used it on four customers’ computers so far w/o any problems.

I hid ( what I thought ) was all the KB’s to stop win 10 from D/L but evidently something triggered the Windows BT folder. But as you can see, it is not 3.3 GB. It evidently needs the other KB’s to expand itself.

Or maybe the folder has been created but the downloads that are to be expanded into it haven’t been downloaded and/or expanded yet…
It’s not just one download file that’s involved – there are at least three separate files to be downloaded, the largest being about 2.63GB.

I just left it there since it was such a small size and the log files seem to indicate that it was looking for something that it didn’t find. But I will keep an eye on it since it has been there since Aug. 3rd.

I had this same error. When I manually said upgrade, it did so without issue (the backup upgrade I think is the problem; left my computer on all night on the day of release and woke up to this error; install files were, of course, already on my machine). I did upgrade from Win8.1. 🙂

I had a similar problem on a MS Surface Pro computer. They pointed me to a direct link to download the software. I suspect that your “Get Win10” upgrade is corrupt. POSSIBLY deleting it and then reinstalling it will give you a working app, and consequently access to the new WIN10 system. The MS Support Team gave me this link:

The Reserve will download Win10 BUT, NOT INSTALL IT

Maybe. I have two laptops with Win 7 installations that were trashed by Win 10 upgrades that were NOT reserved but which MS nevertheless inflicted on them.

It is, already, “worthwhile & stable”, now.

I suggest you go to MS Answers and take a look at the number of threads relating to trashed Office installations as a result of Win 10 upgrades that didn’t trash the OS… Doubtless there are many users with other apps that have been trashed too.

Further to my previous post, if the KB3035583 update has been installed (as seems to be the case), you will need to uninstall it (see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/remove-update#1TC=windows-7). Even after uninstalling the KB3035583 update, Windows may keep running a GWX process in the background. Getting rid of that is rather more involved. See, for example: http://googleexperts.altervista.org/uninstall-kb3035583-windows-10-downloader-windows-7-8-1/

You’ll also want to disable the option to automatically install recommended updates until you see all of KB3035583, KB3021917, KB2990214 and KB2952664 updates, so you can hide them before they get installed.
