9-29-19 — I just installed Windows 10 1903 with updates [Note: I have the HOME version]. Everything went fine until I restarted and I got the following message: “Class shell needs to be configure itself for new operating system“.   I clicked OK.

    I then received the message:

The app has been blocked for your protection. An administrator has blocked you from running this app. For more info, contact the administrator”.

    ClassicStartMenu.exe

    Publisher: Unknown

File Origin: Hard drive on this computer

    Program Location: “C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\Classic Start Menu.exe: — upgrade

I am a novice with the computer and have no idea what this means. Could someone explain the problem in plain English and/or provide a solution to the problem.

    Thank you ahead of time.

Is this a new install of Win10? An upgrade from Win7 or Win8.1?
What version were you running? Win7 or Win8.1?
The original program Classic Shell, that replaced the Windows menu system is not compatible with Win10. You need the upgrade, now called Open Shell. It will install over the old version if you can get the computer to boot up.
You can download it from MajorGeeks here.

I was running Windows 10 1803 Home Version 10.0.17134 before the upgrade to 1903. Since I am already having enough problems with the wonderful updating procedure, is there a way to reinstall the current Classic Shell version 4.3 I have on my computer? Also, I went to the Classic Shell webpage http://www.classicshell.net/downloads/  and it states the “latest stable version” is 4.3.1. If 4.2 won’t work, would 4.3.1?

My computer seems to be working as usual except when I boot-up the system, it gives me the message  “Class shell needs to be configure itself for new operating system“. The app has been blocked for your protection. An administrator has blocked you from running this app. For more info, contact the administrator”. Once I close these messages, the system “seems” to be working fine.

My big concern is that if I remove the current Classic shell, this could open up a bigger can of worms. Thank you for your assistance, I really appreciate the help.

Download the Open Shell (the name has changed) from the link in my post above.
        Do not uninstall Classic Shell.
Install Open Shell and it will update the version you have installed, and I believe it retains your settings.

I use it on Win8.1 and Win10 – works the same.
