Just got back from the Load fest and so far so good with Windows 7. I used Laplink to move files, applications etc. from windows XP and every application works perfectly.
In XP, I had my programs in alphabetical order, but I can’t seem to find that in Windows 7. Is it here?
Thanks

If you look at the Start menu Properties (right-click Start button) and Customize, you will find “Sort All Programs menu by name”. I think this is selected by default.
The “recently used list” in the Start menu is, as you know, arranged according to how recently the program has been used.

AskWoody MVPOctober 22, 2009 at 9:44 am #1182605Thanks Joe that seems to have worked.
Boy the more I use this the more I LIKE it!Glad you resolved it. There have always been settings that seem to get “confused” in each Windows release so that you have to follow the steps you did to regain functionality. Thanks for posting back.
I like Windows 7 myself.

Boy the more I use this the more I LIKE it!To bring this thread a bit closer back on topic:
Good to hear you’ve got it solved, John.
I thought I had seen somewhere that the Start Menu in W7 did not sort correctly (and I hesitated to post at first and then my post was a little short on suggestions what to do (sorry) plus that I still have my hands on the RC); but it didn’t seem logical that something like that was removed, or not working. There is at least one page mentioning something about it, but that was back in the weeks after the public beta release.
In this post I was going to add another option, but found that there perhaps is some (persistent) problem (at least in the RC).
If you uncheck the option “Sort All Programs menu by name” in the Start Menu Properties, you get a new alternative on the right-click context menu on the All Programs menu: “Sort by name“. This I knew, but I had not tested it after installing some software (after all the default programs are already sorted).
After un-checking the abovementioned box my menu looked like the screen shot below. Selecting “Sort by name” (several times) did not help. If I enabled “Sort All Programs menu by name” it became sorted, and when I removed the check again, I still could not sort by name. The third time it worked, sort of, since it did not become unsorted when I unchecked the box.
To conclude: the “manual” sorting that is activated when “Sort All Programs menu by name” is unchecked doesn’t seem to work (at least not in the RC). One can test this by un-checking the box and temporarily move one menu item, then try to right-click on some item and select “Sort by name”. The alphabetical sort order should be restored when “Sort All Programs menu by name” is re-checked in Properties.
It can also be that a manually alphabetically sorted menu (box un-checked) gets unsorted after a restart, I have not checked this several times, but it seems like that.
It is possible that this problem, as it seems, in “manual mode” has an effect some times on the automatic sorting, even if that one is checked. It is always good to test all problematic settings as Joe suggested.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 22, 2009 at 2:39 pm #1182637All you early birds are really making me jealous! I ordered mine in June from Amazon because I don’t subscribe to MSDN or Tech Net or whatever. Amazon is saying it will ship on Monday. Gggrrrrr…
Funny thing is, on their web page, if you order Win 7 and pay for next day shipping you can have it tomorrow! Double Gggrrrrr…

They must be swamped. I pre-ordered W7 from Amazon Canada at about the same time as you. I received an email notification Wednesday (21 Oct.) that it was to be shipped that day. This morning (22 Oct.) at 11:00 a.m. the post office delivered it to my door.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 23, 2009 at 5:38 pm #1182873I have a correction. I got an email from Amazon overnight that it has been shipped by postal service. I don’t know about you “Northern fellas” but I don’t expect I’ll get it until Monday or Tuesday. (c’est la vie)
Before you grumble too much, you should try downloading a subscription copy from the TechNet site. I think every server Microsoft has is sending no more than a trickle of data.

I’m still waiting.
I ordered an Acer Notebook with Vista because it qualified for the Win 7 FREE Upgrade.
I received the Notebook about a month ago.
I registered it with Acer, then when I went to “order” my Upgrade kit,
their system would NOT recognize my Serial Number as being an Acer
product.
Their Customer Service Centre had to get one of their “trainers” involved
to make sure that my “order” would go through.
Finally it seems it did (they sent me an email screen capture confirming address
and details).
The 22nd has come and gone and I’m STILL waiting.
You’d think that with enough “heads up” they’d want their customers
to receive it as soon as possible after 2359 hours of the 21st or 0001 of the 22nd.
9am would have been OK, too.
