I am attempting to view my display on a Sony TV via HDMI.  I can see the Sony TV as an option but can’t get the display to switch.  I suspect a resolution problem, but have been unable to determine Sony resolution.  Computer display is 1024×780 (FHD).  Any help appreciated.

Can you post the Sony TV’s model number? This may give us info we can use to try to figure out what’s going on.

Thank you for your response.  The TV is a Sony Bravia Model HKL-40VE5.

Thanks! I assume that you’ve tried switching the input on the TV’s screen to the HDMI port where you connected the PC, would that be right?

According to the “Suggestions” box at the bottom of page 8 in the user manual, the TV is set to display at a resolution of 1920 x 1080. (It doesn’t look like it’s possible to change this.) Can you try changing the resolution for the Sony TV on your PC’s Display Settings to 1920 x 1080?

The information on page 17 of the user manual may also come in handy.

In case they help, here are two pages from Sony’s website that deal with the issue of not getting a picture when connecting their TVs to a computer: here and here.

Yes, the input is correct on the TV.  We have been using a Win 10 computer on the connection for streaming.  We were attempting to view a DVD on the Win 7 computer.  The Cyberlink DVD software on Windows 10 now wants an upgrade after working for several months.

Are you using the same HDMI port on the TV to view streaming via Windows 10 and a DVD via Windows 7? If you’re switching devices on the same HDMI port, you may need to power off all machines (TV + PCs) before disconnecting the HDMI cable to then reconnect it. I’m no expert on HDMI, but I’ve heard of issues with handshaking when trying to plug/unplug an HDMI cable while it’s powered.

Did you try changing the display resolution on your Windows 7 computer to 1920 x 1080?

A different approach altogether would be to find a new program to play your DVDs on the Windows 10 computer, for example Windows Media Player (still comes preinstalled on Win10) or VLC Media Player.
