Windows 7 Explorer Tree View: Always display current folder, please

Win Explorer shows tree view in left pane, file list of current folder in right pane, and path to current folder in address bar on top. Address bar path and tree view are not always synchronized, but I’d like them to be when I double-click a folder in the list view: address bar updates appropriately, but tree view does not (most of the time; have not figured out why it sometimes does). I am pretty sure XP did it the way I want Explorer to behave. :confused: Is this behavior by Win 7 design? Is there something wrong with my installation of Win 7 Pro 64? Is this behavior controllable somehow?

Mine works exactly as you describe your XP worked. if I click on any folder in the left side the right side and address bar both show same folder. If I click on an item in right side, same thing happens. I have mine set to Single Click rather than Double Click, but this should not have the affect you are describing I wouldn’t believe. Why don’t you try to change to Single Click (open Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options and change to Single Click) and see if things work the way you wish.

Tried your suggestion, Ted, but did not make a difference. Also, when I choose a different folder in one of the address bar’s drop down lists, the tree view does not update accordingly, although the desired file list is displayed in the right pane.

Then I played around some more and found that right clicking in the tree view pane in an empty area (blank line) offers “Expand to current folder”. It was not checked. It is checked now, and the desired behavior is there! Another Windows Secret uncovered …

BTW, could not find “Tools”, “Folder Options” in Windows Explorer. Had to get to it via Help and searching for “Folder Options”, choosing “Change folder options”; then there is a link “Click to open Folder Options”.

To display the Menu bar (File Edit View Tools Help) in Explorer click Organize > Layout > Menu bar.

There must be an option somewhere, do not remember wherre, to turn on the tasks toolbar or something (not sure of the name) as shown here:

There is a difference between expanding a folder in the tree view and selecting a folder in the tree. view. The former doesn’t update the address bar nor the list in the right panel. The latter does.
