Windows 7 PROBLEM with USB 3.0 , For Some Rev. 1.2

Platforms: Dell Dimension 4550 3.06 Ghz P4 HT enabled
    Dell Dimension 4500 2.80 Ghz P4
Addonics Host Controller 2-Port USB 3.0 PCI Controller AD2U3PCI
    WD My Book Essential 1130 2TB USB 3.0 / 2.0 external drive
    Transcend JF700 USB 3.0 16GB flashdrive
    Transcend JF700 USB 3.0 32GB flashdrive

    Operating Systems:

Windows XP SP3 with NECEL-USB3-Host-Driver-10170-setup – works flawlessly

    Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 with RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver-21281-setup – problematic
Anything from 1 to 10 re-installations of USB 3.0 driver required for connection to take effect
Once achieved, connection is solid, can backup etc BUT lost on restart – [Definitely NOT USB 2.0 performance, tested]

Windows 8 Consumer Preview with Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller – 0096 (Microsoft) This driver is Native to WIN 8, when uninstalled , RE-installed automatically with ‘Scan for Hardware Changes’ or Restart
Anything from 0 to 6 re-installations of USB 3.0 driver required for connection to take effect
Once achieved, connection is solid, can backup etc BUT lost on restart – [Definitely NOT USB 2.0 performance, tested]

OBJECT: Demonstrate that problem lies with WIN 7 / WIN 8 – Once connected, that will let your Host Controller, USB 3.0 drivers and CHIPSET, off the hook

    METHOD:

    A. Use USB 2.0 – Until the Windows 7 team get their fingers out, time lost trying to make USB 3.0 work, better used with that (slower) Backup.

B: For those who want USB 3.0 to work and have the thrill of faster Access/BackUp

    1. TOOLS: (USB 3.0 Host Controller PCI/PCI-e in your machine or on MotheBoard)
USB 3.0 Extention Cable (NOT 2.0), for ease of access(!)
    USB 3.0 HDD External Drive AND/OR Flashdrive- USB 3 AND/OR USB 2**
    [FlashDrive highly recommended for TroubleShooting]

** Host Controller and Ext. Cable can also handle USB 2.0, USB 1.1 – Part of WIN 7 weirdness is when connected, on occasion, USB 2.0 Flash Drive NOT recognised (although connection sound, LED, made) – Problem Not experienced with WIN 8 – Solution: Re-install driver – Step 2.(a)

2.(a) INSTALL USB 3.0 Host Conroller Software/Driver (see list below)
(specific to manufacturer of Card/MOtherBOard )
    – IF WIN 8 – not necessary – Native/BuiltIn xHCI

REMOVE Flash Drive and/or External HDD – Devices – Inhibits/slows Install

*** IMPORTANT *** Switch OFF Windows Update OR Disconnect from Internet
Windows Update slows down/plays havoc with Install, drivers are on Disk

IF ‘ [[Your Device is ready to Use]’ message not appear (WIN 7 only), re-install – Step 2.(a)
TIP*** Locate Downloaded Driver (Application) with Explorer and ‘Send Shortcut to Desktop’ – you may have to repeat re-install x no.Times

PLUG IN USB 3.0 Extension Cable (Otherwise you’ll be on your knees, many, many times – unless it’s a Laptop) to your USB 3.0 PORT

    (b) PLUG IN USB 3.0 OR USB 2.0 FlashDrive – LED flashing, staying On, b-boing on speakers? – Good – Autoplay Window up? (might not be enabled) so check My Computer – Drive shown as ‘Removable Drive’? – SUCCESS

    3. ROUTINE for Multiple Attempts to coax WIN 7 into USB 3.0 connectivity:

REMOVE Flash Drive and/or External HDD – Devices Inhibit/slow Install

    (a) Start/Control Panel/Hardware&Sound then OPEN Device Manager (leave open)

    (b) Expand – Universal Serial Bus Controllers – (bottom or near to)
Locate – Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller – [OR Other] (Ignore Root Hub)
Right click – select – Uninstall – Ok (If you tick box for ‘delete driver’, you’ll need to re-install drivers) Step 2.(a)

REMOVE Flash Drive and/or External HDD

    (c) Device Manager – Action (pull down menu) – Click on ‘Update Driver Software..’ / ‘Scan for Hardware Changes’
What you want to see: [installing Device Driver Software] (Not shown WIN8)
Then: [Your Device is ready to Use] Good, but no guarantee of success – failure message?
(There are ‘Intermediate’ Stages eg. Led On/Sound But No autoplay/Drive shown)
    Repeat Step 3.(b)

PLUG IN Flash Drive and/or External HDD – Connection? then – (see Step 2.(b))
IF NOT – REPEAT Step 3.(b) (As many times as you can bear, my limit – 10 times per session) ( 6 times for WIN 8)
    (IF you’re getting nowhere , re-install driver – Step 2.(a)

AVOID ReStarting/BOOT with USB 3.0 Devices Plugged in Port
    it may slow things up

USB 3.00 Host Controller Software/Drivers tried on this Platform:
For example (you may have Mahufacturer other than NEC/Renesas)

    NECEL-USB3-Host-Driver-10170-setup
    RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver-21190-setup
    RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver-21281-setup
    USB3.0_allOS_2.1.27.0_PV
    USB3.0_allOS_2.1.28.0_PV
    USB3.0_allOS_2.1.28.1_PV (from Intel!)
    renesas_nec_usb3_2.1.32.0 (http://www.station-drivers.com).exe) Also Lenovo

All tried and working on this PLATFORM (Using latest)

    OPINION:

This is a controversial topic, only in the sense that searches reveal many users with this problem and apparent silence from Microsoft (not slagging off, I am a fan)
For Example: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/Search/Search?SearchTerm=usb+3.0&CurrentScope.ForumName=Windows&CurrentScope.Filter=windows_7&askingquestion=true Microsoft Answers yields zilch for ‘USB 3.0’ search

The fact that Microsoft are now collaborating with Renesas (was NEC) on WIN 8 Native (builtin in O/S) driver:
Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller – 0096 driver means that it should work and any solution applied to WIN 7.

This cannot be a priority for Microsoft, only gentle pressure from users might help.

PROBLEM: Some Installations with WIN 7 don’t encounter USB 3.0 bug, so:
BLAME: MOTHERBOARD / BIOS [Old PC after all] OR
Host Controller Hardware Card / Firmware OR
    Host Controller Software/Drivers OR
    OPERATING SYSTEM (o/s) AND even
CHIPSET [ Ivy Brridge etc. – That leaves most of us, far behind]

MY ARGUMENT and Simple Logic is:

IF USB 3.0 works flawlessly with WINDOWS XP
THEN Installations of WIN 7 and WIN 8 on the same Platform (Same Hardware),
which exhibit no other problems and are perfeclly stable, should work.
Once connection is established, USB 3.0 works flawlessly – no breaks or drops [Definitely NOT USB 2.0 performance, tested]

There are enough clues above, for someone knowledgeable to push the envelope along,

Putting it simply, WIN 7 / 8 are ‘weak’ in STARTING process even though Device Manager reports ‘This device is working properly.’
It might reside at the Boot/Logon stage

BEWARE of ‘Intermediate’ Stage in Above Install/Re-Install Routine:
FlashDrive LED is on, Host Controller – ‘This Device is woking properly’ (Properties)
but no sound or Drive in Computer/Explorer – or Disk Drive in Device Manager persevere with Step 3.
[not impossible, but impractical to attempt with Ext. HDD with weak LED]

No guarantee that this Method Operandi will NOT harm your Windows O/S,
but This PLATFORM has suffered NO ill effects, after 1K+ attempts… WINDOWS is
    pretty robust animal
Project started with Windows 7 install Nov’11
‘It’s like priming a pump, eventually less attempts are required (System learning?)

At no time has connection, once established, dropped on this PLATFORM and
(Disconnected). Set Disk Drive-Properties- Policies – Quick Removal (Default) in
    Device Manager

“This is as RANDOM AS IT GETS” – Ed.

Possible clue: WIN 8 came up with this error in Device Manager (USB Mass Storage Device) – ‘Port Reset Failed’ – {Code 29) when Flashdrive plugged in on BOOT/LOGON

    That’s all folks

PS. What ever you do, don’t mention the CHIPSET, I mentioned it once but i think i got away with it… (Oh no you didn’t) {Courtersy of PCReview, Seven Forums)

Thanks for all the information on the winy usb 3.0 issues. I agree with your statement when you said all this trouble isn’t worth the faster speeds, but I’m in it for “the thrill of faster access times”

I currently have followed all of part 1 (except for the multiple installations) and most recently completed part 2, with the usb super speed diagnostic tool installation.

i’m still only getting 30mg/sec and I’m pretty sure I should be getting around at least 60mg/s:

Everything went according to your plan, except for my Western Digital 1 TB portable harddrive showing up under “harddisk drives” not “devices with removeable storage” is this a big deal?

I installed the windows SES drivers for this device when I first installed. If I remove my harddrive from the “hard diskdrives” catagory and get it to show up under “devices with removeable storage” will that enable 3.0 transfer speeds? (around 60mb/s)

    • #1338670

      Hi Rob

Your WD 1TB in Hard Disk Drives is in the right place, think of it as an ‘External Drive’ rather than a
‘Removable Device’. (Would not know how to shift it to ‘Devices with etc.’ and would not want to as
there would be no speed advantage) Installed WD SES drivers, good

Check this out first: when i bought my WD 2TB, it was first with USB 3.0/2.0 facility; currently it’s
available on 500GB – 3TB (MyBook Essential) and others. So check your model Name. and Google ‘WD’

MyBook USB 2.0 Diskmark results Read 31.99 Write 26.51 which seem to be in the ball park of what you’re
      getting.

So, we need more info. Is WD 1TB USB 3.0 compliant?
Did cable come with it (needs to be USB 3.0)?
Using USB 3.0 Card or Port built in MOBO
What USB 3.0 Host Controller is turning up in Device Manager?
Have you tried a FlashDrive (Removable Device) plugged in USB2 then USB3 for
      comparison?

Enough to be going on with, good luck and letmeknow

      • #1338726

        Thanks for the reply Zirc99.

Thanks for clearing up the SES settings. Glad it’s in the right place.

        I have a WD My Passport 1TB Model#: WDBBEP0010BBK-01

it has the fancy checker print on top, slightly smaller than the MyPassport essentials. It has USB 3.0, and comes with the SS cable that has the Microusb + additional connections built in.

I’m using this controller NEC/RENESAS USB3 Controller (uPD720200) Drivers Version 2.1.36.0 drivers were updated this year.

I have not tried using a usb 3.0/2.0 flash drive. I’ll try that out.

    • #1338732

      Rob

Everything seems in order except the MB/s.. If you’re not using DiskMark download ver. 3.0.1c
      from http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/CrystalDiskMark-Download-70870.html
using (UK) Download Location (Just tried it)

That way we’ll be comparing like with like – Just take Seq Read & Write results
The MyBook Essentials on my system is returning: Read 83 MB/s and Write 79 MB/s

We’re not left with many options to explain your results, except that the Port you have
down as USB 3.0, is an USB 2.0 port. Very unlkely, I know, but we’ve all done it at some time

There’s always a solution, so keep on going

      • #1338733

Thanks zirc, i’ll try the softpedia software tonight.

I’m pretty sure it’s the right port, it’s got the blue bar on it, unless something was switched around somewhere.

Thanks for all the work you’ve done and confirming all the work i’ve done, it’s new territory for me.

Windows 7 PROBLEM with USB 3.0 , For Some Rev. 1.2

Platforms: Dell Dimension 4550 3.06 Ghz P4 HT enabled
      Dell Dimension 4500 2.80 Ghz P4

Here’s where your problem lies, pure and simple. Both these machines have a motherboard which only supports USB 2.0

You can plug a USB flashdrive 3.0 in it by all means, but the motherboard will slow it down to the maximum speed it supports.

Same goes for a PCI USB 3.0 expansion card.

Here are the specs for both:

        [*]Dell Dimension 4550
        [*]Dell Dimension 4500

Windows 7 is giving you the true reading which complies with the USB 2.0 spec. If you want it to support USB 3.0, change the motherboard.

      • #1338774

I’m using a Sager NP5135/Clevo B5130M Laptop. It came from the factory with USB 3.0 installed. (blue port)

        • #1338779

          @robwaterman

Yes, blue port s/b USB 3.0

Let’s have DiskMark Seq Read & Write results for:
          Your Internal HDD (C:/)
WD 1TB plugged into Blue (USB 3.0) Port (drive letter as per MyComputer)
WD 1TB plugged into Grey (USB 2.0) Port (drive letter as per MyComputer)

With these three sets of results, we’ll know where we stand

      Xircal

Appreciate the obvious research and thought that you’ve applied to the thread,,,

      BUT

The “problem” in the title is about USB 3.0 not starting on boot with WIN 7 / 8, without some help,,,
Not about speed, the speeds are fine. The PCI USB 3.0 expansion card does not get ‘slowed’ because
a motherboard has USB 2.0 ports, otherwise the manufacture and installation of such cards would be
      pointless

Sorry if my tract has misled you, but we are all here to learn from each other
However, the suggestion to change a motherboard (2002 vintage) just for USB 3.0, is joke, right?

Both those machines date from the stoneage. I’d be very surprised if you even got Window 7 to work on it let alone rectifying issues with USB 3.0

        • #1344450

          Hi Zirc99,

i have the same problem with USB 3.0 but i have it with my server.
i use my server like a nas, and it goes to sleep after 1 hour. But when i wake it up, usb 3.0 is gone.

          My server is a Dell Optiplex 990: Core i7-2600, 2x 4GB DDR3 10600, 128GB SSD Samsung disk (only a few months old)
In bought and put in a Western Digital 2-port USB 3.0 PCI-e card (with the Renesas/NEC chip) and connected a Western Digital Mybook USB 3.0 3TB disk to it.
I also have a Western Digital Mybook 2TB USB 2.0 disk connected to it.

I have tested this with above hardware, and under Windows Server 2008 DataCenter R2 (x64), Windows Server 2012 Beta (x64) and Windows Server 2012 Relase Candidate (x64)

I had the Server running Server 2008 R2 (X64) at first and tried the default Dell USB 3.0 driver, and the latest drivers from Renesas.
When the server is running, all is well and USB is super fast! No complaints. But when the server isnt in use for an hour it goes to sleep, and i wake it up via a WOL.exe when i start my PC or MediaCenter. And in 75% of the time, USB 3.0 is dead/gone/missing. Yellow mark in the hardware saying: renesas usb 3.0 eXtensible host controller This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)
A simple reboot and USB 3.0 is back. But its not normal to reboot direct after i woke my server up. Thats not the purpose of letting it go to sleep.

Then came the Windows Server 2012 Beta (x64). Like WIndows 8 it has USB 3.0 drivers native, so i gave it a trie. And YES, with exact the same settings as on 2008 R2 (x64) i never had any problems! Going to sleep, waking up, and NEVER EVER any problems with USB 3.0. So exactly the same hardware and the same power settings!

I was so enthousiast that when the Release Candidate came of Windows Server 2012 (x64) I put that one. Still exact the same hardware and power settings, the USB 3.0 problem is back ! Almosdt 75% of the time my USB 3.0 is gone/dead after a wake up and i need to reboot to get it back. And again Yellow mark in the hardware saying: renesas usb 3.0 eXtensible host controller This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)

So i really dont know what to do. I cant go back to the Windows Server 2012 Beta (x64), cause its just a Beta and will expire eventually. I really want to buy Windows Server 2012 (x64) when it comes out, but i have to be sure USB 3.0 will work fine! I wish someone (Like Microsoft) had a solution for this. Come one, USB 3.0 excists for so long now and it getting so affordable lately.

On both not working OSs i tried every tirck on the internet and every power setting available, but nothing seems to help…
I really hate it cause the speed of USB 3.0 is super!

            Hi Lindsey

Appreciate your detailed contribution to the thread, but first my non-credentials:
No experience of Network-Attached Storage (nas), Windows Server O/S or Optiplex 990
Solved my USB 3.0 problem by aquiring new platform (Dell Precision 490) so that same
Addonics Host Controller card now works fine. My valued Dimensions 4550/4500 must have
had something in BIOS/Chipset that WIN 7/8 did not cater for, hence startup problem although
these O/S’s work in all other respects on these ancient platforms

That may sound like a drastic solution, but reason is that Pentium 4 has no ‘eXecute Disable bit’
function and Windows 8 Release Preview won’t install without it. (M’soft could have told us with
WIN 8 Consumer Preview, rather than raising false hopes) Like you, like to keep up

Your Problem – Can only offer workaround:

            Rather than re-booting to re-establish USB 3.0

            Navigate to Device Manager
Locate Renesas USB 3.00 Host Controller with ‘yellow mark’
            Right click and Uninstall
Go top Device Manager and Action
Click Scan for hardware changes (or Windows Server equivalent)

If that works, you can semi-automate it using the ‘gizmo’ discovered in this series

Windows 7 PROBLEM with USB 3.0 PART 5 – Rollin’ News Rev. 1.0

            http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho…-5-Rollin-News

You may have to unplug USB 3.0/2.0 devices from Host Controller( a pain I know, but it’s that, a
            long wait or a re-boot)

BEFORE you do all that check for latest BIOS @ Dell Drivers & Downloads:
            O990-A13.exe (5MB) 24/05/2012
            O990-A03.exe (5MB) 11/05/2011

are only two listed. Any Update of BIOS has its RISKs, so use this information to confirm
that your BIOS is up to date… Even if it’s not, don’t think your problem warrants potential
lock out (No floppy version available)

ALSO: Check this, your WD Externals could be confused by server sleep, so re-boot
by plugging power supply cord out, pause and back in

Finally, ADDONICS card is back in Dimension 4550 working well with USB30CV on desktop
            to start it
Precision 490 has new USB 3.0 4-Port Host Controller Card, BEST CONNECTIVITY, cheap and
very effective so far (80 MB/s Write from 65 MB/s to WD MyBook 3.0 2TB) Using DiskMark

So that’s a happy ending to my usb 3 story, good luck with yours
            Let us know

    • #1398047

Hi there, I have a Problem that seems to correspond to this. Though the issue is slightly different.
I have a VIA USB 3.0 PCI card. From the beginning onwards I had the following problem. Mostly when I install the driver I “only” get the host (VIA 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller) as also the USB3.0 driver (VIA USB 3 Root Hub & VIA USB eXtensible Host Controller) installed. Nearly always I lack the USB 2.0 controller (VIA USB 2.0). Funny enough it won’t recognize any device plugged in without the 2.0 driver. Windows seams to forget that the driver is necessary and I had the system working very well till after some update the 2.0 driver went missing. Any idea how where I can change the setting so it will stay in system respectively get installed?

    • #1398059

      HI BlackBoxDemon

Guess work, you have WIN 7 possibly Vista as O/S (not WIN 8 or XP)
confirm card is VIA PCI not PCIe
      Remove VIA USB 3.0 card
On boot, USB Root Hub (5 in my case (WIN7) should be restored
Make a list of “Universal Serial Bus Controllers:”
Check USB 2.0 port with thumb drive

      Re-Install VIA USB 3.0 card
Boot up and see if Windows can find Drivers
Failing that, install latest drivers for card
In Device Manager, compare “Universal Serial Bus Controllers:” entries

Can confirm that on my WIN7 VIA PCIe system there is an entry “VIA USB 2 Hub” as well as 3 Root, eXtensible and
      5 x USB Root Hub
Not sure about “VIA 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller” or where it comes in, my Controllers being all Intel (Dell)

Hope this gets you on the way to a solution
(Restore system to before update? Which update?)

Ups. Sorry for the lack of information. Windows 7 x64. The USB Hubs should be working fine, at least all the other USB 2.0 stuff is there and works very well (also my different USB 3.0 devices if connected to the other USB 2.0 slots). Screenshot of device manager without installed drivers is included. Will try your reboot with disconnected card and clean up the system some more. (I already cleaned registry and uninstalled the monitoring program… but there could be something left of course :-D) Thanx for the fast response to this old thread! Will post results …

btw, forget the 1394 Controller thing.. has nothing to do with the usb of course…

Okay, Thanx for the idea with ripping the card out and putting it back in. Reinstalled the drivers and now that #@!*##*@!! USB 2.0 is back (see picture)! Any idea how I can make that thing stay there?

Glad you have a result, no reason why it should not stay there… Should it disappear again, only you are in a position to troubleshoot.

Next time, try uninstalling and re-installing VIA USB 3.0 driver (without removing card) and
if it reccurs you could use USB30CV utility (w. shortcut on Desktop) as a starting handle for yr USB 3.0

There r a lot of posts about this USB3 problem. No answers – until now – maybe.
I read a post about a problem with a wireless mouse. Someone posted an answer ref to an Intel white paper RE USB3 noise in the 2.4GHz band. The problem was only helped using some copious shielding of connectors and components.

OK, after trying every driver update and fw update I could find, I decided my issue with my PCIe to USB acted like it was a noise thing so I pulled it out, disassembled the PCIe connector, lined it with copper foil tape and connected it to a grd pin on the PCIe connector. Then I wrapped the tape around the cable up to the front panel box and connected that foil to the foil in the connector.
It has not been a long time 2 hrs maybe, but it never stayed up this long from a boot.
      I am hopeful.
If u try this, other methods and other metal foil may work. I have had this copper tape for a long time. Make sure ONE end it grounded preferably close to the MB. If u ground both ends u will get a ground loop and maybe make things worse. I might cover it with scotch tape to prevent the cable from touching the chassis, though the cable is much stiffer now.

Interesting foray into DIY and Heath Robinson solution to a problem – Apparently, for Notebook/Laptop users
        (zapping MotherBoard & OR PCIe USB3 adapter/card a risk)

Desktop: 2.4Ghz Mouse in USB2: Ext HDD + 3 FlashDrives in USB3 ports – No Problems
2.4Ghz Mouse or Keyboard in USB3 with 1 HDD/FlashDrive – No Go, whichever plugged in last, knocks other out
Ie. Use Mouse/Keyboard only on USB2 – no advantage on USB3

If you lose your mouse at any time, unplug the dongle (USB2) and plug it in again (No Reboot ness.)

NoteBook/Laptop: Don’t have experience of unit with USB3 ports
Possible solutions: Use only USB2, for extHDD/FlashDrive/Printer
Try another 2.4Ghz Mouse in USB2 port, they differ in quality

the tests Intel did for the white paper involved using laptops. The solution RE wrapping connectors and cables with foil was not pretty, but apparently it helped a lot. I woke from sleep this AM and it is still working.

So, the USB 2.20 part is missing again. All trys to get it back without dismantling the card are of no avail.
      @ zirc 99 : It’s PCI-e …

Sorry to hear you’re still plagued by your problem…

Response and sugestions, having looked at yr Device Manager Pic:

Woa! too many USB 2 ports/controllers for my experience: Dimension 4500/50 (4) Precision 490 (5)
You have (8) – is that achieved with USB 2 Add on Card? How many physical ports on MotherBoard?

You have many things plugged in:
2 generic USB Hubs – usually 4/7 USB Adapters
3 USB Composite Devices eg Mouse, Keyboard
        A Camera
2 Mass Storage Devices – HDD/ Flash Drive
        Also:
There is IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller – FireWire?

So, Ist Step – Disconnect all external USB 2/3 Devices
Take out Firewire? Controller Card (For now)

Thinking that we are dealing with a conflict here:
Reboot, have a look at Device Manager, then plug in each device in turn leaving Device Manager open
and checking after each one (leaving USB Hubs until last (Can be dodgy)

Going back a bit, the problem seemed to follow inclusion of USB3 (VIA) Controller
So here is a possible cause:
The VIA version generates an USB 2 Hub could be (1) too many for your system
Dispensed with my VIA card (Seating problem) for a Fresco Logic USB 3.0 Card and hey! NO Fresco USB 2 Hub

If no problems occur, for a prolonged length of time – It’s Decision Time:
Take out USB2 Card Adapter (if you’ve got one) OR
IEEE 1394 Firewire? OR USB 3 – which suits you better?

If you want it all – try a non VIA USB 3 card – that won’t lob in another USB 2 Hub
That will mean spending money on a hunch (No responsibility taken, thank you very much)

        Added Nov5, 2013

With so many USB 2 devices, there is the prospect of a Voltage drop, depending
how much power is drawn by attached devices

One particular to watch is the USB Hub (eg 7 ports – generating (2) Generic USB Hubs
in Device Manager) normally supplied with it’s own power adapter
Most people don’t use it, as it seems to work without it plugged in

Even with the adapter used, there can be problems – depending on quality of Hub

USB 2 Hub in Device Manager – USB Hub (Hardware attached) two different things,
        not to be confused

So, fixed it the old way (rip the card out, clean system plug card back in and reinstall driver). I needed 2 trys this time. Seams the USB2 part goes missing if I boot up a few times without any device pluged into the Hub.
There should be no powerproblem since I have a 1200W bequiet and only one gfx card installed atm and the 3.0 pce card has an extra powersupply. Except fo a usb2 hub on the chasis all the stuff listed is Mainboard. I disconected one other USB2.0 hub that I had. Didn’t change anything I guess. Only devices I use are the camera, printer, mouse and keyboard appart from USB3.0 stuff I sometimes connect in the USB3.0 Hub. Well, new computer isnt that far of, hope the problem will be academic then.
          Thanx for the support !

Okay, installed xbox thing for a Game controller and gues what, the VIA USB 2.0 driver is missing again. Crap. Is there a way to tell Windows “DON’T DELETE THAT DRIVER !!!” ?
