Windows 7 PROBLEM with USB 3.0 PART TWO – Continuing Quest

Consider: USB Mass Storage Device Drivers used in WIN XP, 7, 8

PLATFORMS Tested:

Dell Dimension 4550 3.06 Ghz P4 HT enabled
Dell Dimension 4500 2.80 Ghz P4
ADDONICS Host Controller 2-Port USB 3.0 PCI Controller
WD My Book Essential 1130 2TB USB 3.0/2.0 external drive
Transcend JF700 USB 3.0 16GB flashdrive

Operating Systems:

Windows XP SP3 with NECEL-USB3-Host-Driver-10170-setup – works flawlessly
01/07/2001 5.1.2600.0 (USB 2.0 / 3.0 – only one encountered)

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver-21281-setup – problematic

21/06/2006 6.1.7600 16385
21/06/2006 6.1.7601 17577 (USB 2.0 / 3.0 – best chance for connection)

Compared to XP and WIN 8, this seems to be a little confused…

Anything from 1 to 10 re-installations of USB 3.0 driver required for connection to take effect
Once achieved, connection is solid, can backup etc BUT lost on restart – [Definitely NOT USB 2.0 performance, tested]

Windows 8 Consumer Preview
with Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller – 0096 (Microsoft)

21/06/2006 6.2.8250.0 (USB 2.0 / 3.0 – only one encountered)

This driver is Native to WIN 8, when uninstalled , RE-installed automatically with ‘Scan for Hardware Changes’ or Restart
Anything from 0 to 6 re-installations of USB 3.0 driver required for connection to take effect
Once achieved, connection is solid, can backup etc BUT lost on restart – [Definitely NOT USB 2.0 performance, tested]

Demonstrate that problem lies with WIN 7 / WIN 8 – Once connected, that shoud let your Host Controller and USB 3.0 drivers AND Chipset off the hook

New tech that was tested on mature OS’s (XP/Vista) is not likely to get mature drivers for the less mature/Release candidate OS’s (W7/8) until the chipset makers create, test and then release them.

Not up on chipsets, at all. Can only report that ‘hit rate’ (no of Re-Installs to connect to USB 3.0)
is much improved in WIN 8 – so progress has been made.
Also this problem affects, let’s be generous to microsoft, only a sizable minority of users (as as one can tell)

My contention is: If one can backup/restore 100’s of GB, there’s nothing up with the chipset or it’s drivers
(You’d expect all kind of trouble – drop outs/fall offs/corruption etc

Sit back and think about it – it’s not Microsoft’s job to write drivers – even if the source code is Open. It’s down to the chip vendors.

MSFT do supply basic drivers with their OS’s (impossible to do in retrospect), so W8 will probably have usable drivers for the recent tech. hardware but they will rarely be as ‘fast’ as the later ones as the chip makers drivers are tested and mature. With graphics cards, for instance, Windows will install drivers capable of Aero but little more – if you want to do any 3D gaming, you have to install from closer to the source.

Thanks, you’re helping me to focus:
In this case (USB 3.0) the chip vendors (NEC)Renesas/Intel et al produce:
eg. renesas_nec_usb3_2.1.32.0 -USB 3.0 Host Controller driver

They have to meet Microsoft O/S’s half way – in this case:
21/06/2006 6.1.7601 17577 USB Mass Storage Device driver (It has Microsoft’s name on it, and there are lots…)

As you infer, this driver handles all manner of devices – Hence the occasional hitch…

It’s down to a level of co-operation and priority. As I understand it, WIN 7 was already constructed and Microsoft
weren’t about to include USB 3.0 into their plans. (Leaving the vendors to do all the legwork)

Now that USB 3.0 has gone ‘Native’ and there’s collaboration, there’s hope (problem diminished in WIN 8)

BUT don’t want WIN 7 to be left behind, would like Microsoft to fix the ‘Glitch’

I’m having this issue between Windows 7 & 8 RP myself, it’s not fiction, or a novel, it’s FACT! I bought a USB 3.0 enclosure to install my original HDD in. Assembled everything, same issue as with 2 other USB 3.0 devices (on Win 7), the device is trying to kick in (a constant thumping sound), but won’t work.

Just clean installed Windows 8 RP last night, the device works perfectly! No, it’s not MS’s place to furnish drivers, but they do with other crap (like outdated video/wi-fi drivers), so why not release other drivers, so that our Renesas USB 3.0 controller will properly work? The Renesas USB eXtensible host controller -0096 is a perfect fit. Note the capital “X” in the word, sounds like some Apple engineers are at MS, this is a Steve Jobs sig. Whoever, whatever, it works.

This driver needs to be released for Windows 7 & Vista also.
